The way the press is treating chatbots, like they have agency and they “know” things all of a sudden, crossed the line recently from dumb and obsequious to something else entirely. Treating them as alive and making conscious decisions is an almost religious belief. It won’t age well.

No kidding. I remember when our local government wanted record stores to track names of everyone buying metal records. (Maybe rap too and I’ve just forgotten?)

(Why do I remember this? A good friend of mine owned a record store, and as a new librarian I had some strong opinions, and ideas.)

Generative AI is an engine for churning out contaminated information faster than people can produce safe information, let alone fact check and correct it.

And corrections never remove the original contamination, it's an attempt to stem the metaphorical bleeding and hope for the best. 11/

prokopetz Honestly, the whole Tumblr flagging debacle reminds me of nothing so much as the official White Wolf forums back in the 1990s, whose automatic profanity filters were so overzealous that they ended up censoring terminology from some of their own games. (For the uninitiated, the starkest example was probably the filter that automatically converted "ass" to "butt", including when the string A-S-S appeared as part of another word. The trouble is that White Wolf's most popular game, Vampire: The Masquerade, included in its lore a prominent vampire clan called the Assamites, who stock-in-trade was assassination. Under the forum's profanity filter, players were reduced to referring to them as the Buttamites, and their missions as - you guessed it - buttbuttinations.)

brightwanderer I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned "forever" into the only acceptable definition of success. Like... if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it's a "failed" business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don't actually want to keep doing that, you're a "failed" writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it's a "failed" marriage. The only acceptable "win condition" is "you keep doing that thing forever". A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a "real" friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a "phase" - or, alternatively, a "pity" that you don't do that thing any more. A fandom is "dying" because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things. I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it's okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success... I don't think that's doing us any good at all.

I brought the example of Trophy Gold because combat is just another challenge there, albeit one heavily against the players (in a game already so much against players). You also do not need more preparations/money sinks to help with that than with any other challenge.

A dissonance I keep getting baffled with in the OSR-leaning adventuconquistadores games (since the others glorify and exalt in it) is how much combat, for something not rewarding, disincentivesed part of the gamescape, takes all the oxygen away the moment it is engaged with.
