Tomorrow’s sermon on Lazarus and the rich man will include Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (my favorite version is “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”), Mary’s Magnificat, Gustavo Gutiérrez, and stats on current famines in our world in Gaza, Sudan, South Sudan, Haiti, and Mali.

This is a piece I did five years ago called “Shiprah and Puah: Midwives of Resistance.” After all these centuries, they continue to be examples of what it means to be faithful and defiant in the face of evil and power. May we be inspired by their faithfulness and courage.

I’ve noticed my exhaustion and constantly playing games on my phone as a distraction from the real sorrow I feel about the events unfolding in our state, nation, and world. It’s okay to feel the sadness, friends. This is not the way it should be.
