I.T. guy, writer, grumpy archivist, actually has a history hat

May ramble about history, railroads, greyhounds, kayaks, science, fiction, gaming, and combinations thereof.
This 15-year old successfully pulling off "French detective investigating daring jewel heist" to the extent that much of the world believed it is pretty much what the Mandate of Heaven looks like. As @betsyphillips.bsky.social was telling me, there's a god, and he likes this kid.

Go follow this Kickstarter! It's going to be fantastic!
Some recent commissions for a project by @leightonc.bsky.social - go give this a follow - currently at 24 followers for the project - wondering if we can hit 50 by weekend?

You'd be real ill-advised to sleep on the work @nashvillebanner.bsky.social is doing. Glad to see this recognition, and cannot recommend strongly enough that you read and financially support them, too.
Some news: We received a $1.2M grant from@theajp.bsky.social to expand our statehouse & local coverage — including new beats in health, housing & environment to deepen civic engagement in Middle TN. The funding boosts our revenue team for a stronger, sustainable newsroom primed for growth.

There's a percentage of Nashville history that would be unknown if not for the work she's done, and enabled to be done. It's not an insignificant percentage.

In the spring of 1996, I was a DJ for WTLX, Transylvania University (Lexington, KY). I co-hosted the late show on Saturday evenings, and when we wrapped we'd drop in a CD for the overnight.

I wrote about Fisk University's new digital portal to the Rosenwald Fund archive — an online repository of more than 146,000 (and counting) artifacts related to the Rosenwald Schools, which provided opportunities for Black students in the Jim Crow South.

Spent the morning discovering a whole alternate timeline where the Tennessee Central Railway took a completely different route to the east, and thinking about how different things could have been.

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

It’s National Dog Day, so here’s how Peggy answered the question “want to go for a walk?” The great thing about greyhounds is you get a good idea of where you stand. I stand, as it turns out, at the round end.

Through profound calendar mismanagement, I have appointment led with two different specialists in two different parts of town in the same day part. I am, I believe the technical term is, hosed.

Dear Past Me,

Your "pretty clever data design" wasn't.

"This should make data migration easier" doesn't.

"I'm sure I'll figure it out by then!" Mhm. Go ahead and think that.

@leightonc.bsky.social has apparently promised that I will make you a balloon animal if you back his kickstarter for a Beowulf tabletop RPG. It's true. Hope you like balloon snakes, the game is better than my balloon skills.
Hey folks, we have just 10 HOURS REMAINING in the ol' campaign, we're sitting here by the phones waiting for just a few more backers to put us over the finish line! We've still got some great performances lined up for you . . .

Just read a letter in a personnel file from the archives where a fired train engineer in about 1910 successfully defended himself from being fired by arguing that he wasn’t drinking on the job, technically he was drinking at home AND THEN coming to his job.

Seems like a pretty good time for having a “Robin Hood next door” kind of game.
Just over a week left to make my Robin Hood/My Name Is Earl/Raising Hope/Sprung zine happen. Even if it's not your thing, shares are appreciated.
