I.T. guy, writer, grumpy archivist, actually has a history hat

May ramble about history, railroads, greyhounds, kayaks, science, fiction, gaming, and combinations thereof.
Spent the morning discovering a whole alternate timeline where the Tennessee Central Railway took a completely different route to the east, and thinking about how different things could have been.

It’s National Dog Day, so here’s how Peggy answered the question “want to go for a walk?” The great thing about greyhounds is you get a good idea of where you stand. I stand, as it turns out, at the round end.

I’m proud of the work we did. We mostly got it right, but it took so much work to get it that way. Interviews, calls, visits, buddies, follow up.

In the war between perfect and done, chalk one up, literally, for done. Next week: rewriting on the level.

The Tennessee Central Railway, known as the “Ten Cent” by the witty and observant, seems to have taken out only 1 Christmas ad during its 70-ish years. Probably a bunch of ghosts showed up overnight and haunted someone in the 1940s until he coughed up five bucks for this masterpiece.

Slightly late to the party, but finished a second read over the weekend after discovering how small and how close cities and history can be.

Highly recommend for those who wrestle with the violent reaction to the Civil Rights movement.

Not all of them grow out of it.

Maybe my favorite piece in the Tennessee Central Railroad Museum collection is this chunk of wood. It was used as a rail-joiner on one of the TC’s branch lines. Usually made of, you know, steel, this piece represents the creativity of a track crew on a chronically broke railroad.

Peggy the greyhound has zero sense of personal space, shame, or dignity.

Argued with two different balky scanners today to produce one scan with absolutely crap results. Still, the first load at the Hickman Incline, January 11, 1902. Now you know exactly as much as we at the museum do.

Know more than we do? Please share!

Hey so Sen. Blackburn’s telephone town hall shows up as spam, but maybe if you get a call from this number you can get a question or two in.

Having just returned from five days at the in-laws with two of the judgy bags-of-elbows, yes. At least a small religion, possibly a medium, up and coming one.

Some days you open a box to uncover historical mysteries, and sometimes it’s to discover historical lost underwear.

“But That’s My Spot,” digital photography, 2023. The artist contemplates the meaningless nature of place and where exactly he’s going to sleep now. Alternative title: Still Life with #greyhounds
