Over on Whatever today, I've written a longish piece on billionaires and boycotts, how boycotts are effective (and are not), what to do when you don't feel you can boycott, and what to say when someone is telling you that you're not doing it right:

One of the major problems with billionaires owning major media is that it literally does not matter if they are profitable. They can take a loss on them because the propaganda and narrative control is worth every penny.
Bezos isn't trying to make the Washington Post successful, obviously. He's trying to turn it into his Twitter.

Completely anecdotal, but at a fancy legal conference making small talk about holiday and travel and working overseas, every single lawyer I've spoken to has said Avoid The 🇺🇸 Holy S***WTF.

Two years ago, I discovered a love story hidden within Scott’s last Antarctic expedition—between two of his officers, Pennell and Atkinson. They survived the tragedy which took Scott’s life and shocked the world, but further dangers still lay ahead for them.

The biggest reason why I dislike the idea of respectability in dress is because it conflates the *appearance* of virtue with *actual* virtue. Wearing a suit doesn't make you respectful, intelligent, or capable, just as wearing a leather jacket doesn't make you rugged.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

People don’t want to move to failed states, no matter how great their malls are.

They want to move to a place where they feel they’ll have a fair shake. Where they don’t have to bribe officials. Where the water and air is clean. Where they believe that wrongdoers will face justice.
