The US spent 80 years pretending it had learned something about freedom and the sanctity of human life from WWII. In reality all we learned is that it feels good to win. And now the US is descending into fascism, except this time there’s no country strong enough to stop us.

Congress needs to make sure there are consequences for this week. You can’t unilaterally start a war and destabilize our international alliances while your goons shoot a mother in the face domestically and get to say wait til the next election. USE YOUR OFFICE NOW.

Can you accept - even w/o agreeing with all our positions - that Black people know profound truths about this country that are not on Schoolhouse Rock?

Now that the tactics they’ve used in our communities are becoming national policy, are you ready to concede that you need our “expertise” as well?
I’m glad to see Bill say this. But when after a century of just the type of abuse we saw today - relentless and cruel, ensnaring our children and intimidating our communities - young Black people said in frustration, anger, and demand for change “defund the police” - so many of you denounced them.

It’s great that all these mayors are telling ICE to leave, but how about instructing the police chief to arrest ICE agents who are clearly engaged in illegal activity

Weird. If I feared for my life I would probably back up and try to move a safe distance away from a vehicle, rather than stand directly in front of it.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.

I am sorry, but how is the US going to vote its way out of this?
With an annual budget that is 10 times the size of the agency’s total surveillance spending for the last 13 years, ICE is going on a shopping spree, creating one of the largest, most comprehensive domestic surveillance machines in history. Here’s what they are buying. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

When cops kill, police agencies often mislead, exonerate too quickly, smear the deceased, use the exonerative tense, etc.

But there's at least usually some solemnity -- acknowledgement that the loss of life is regrettable.

It's the absolute glee in these responses that I can't shake.

Both-sides-ism run amok
Belatedly, this line from Weiss' memo is...something

Let's get someone who says banishing to CECOT was legit, she says

Here's the thing: There's a consensus among legal experts that *wasn't* legit

You can find someone who says moon is made outta Fluffernutter. Doesn't mean you should quote 'em

They are reclassifying them as "medical devices" which will be impossible for most companies to legally comply with. This is the bare-minimum care for trans adults.

Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can ‘revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere

Thinking of the John Holdren quote that we have three options: mitigation, adaptation or suffering. The third is growing ever more apparent as progress lags on one and two.
