The whole system needs reforming - I think at least for leasehold houses there should be an obligation to offer the freehold to the leaseholder at fair cost + fees before selling to someone else (and bring in commonhold for flats)

(for people not familiar with the Sheffield property market, a lot of houses there are on very long leases at very low ground rent - mine was 999 years at about £3 a year. We'd vaguely planned to buy the freehold but for £3 a year it wasn't a priority!)

This is definitely an issue beyond this guy. My freehold was bought by a different scammy landlord who sent us a bunch of letters threatening massive charges and offering to sell us the freehold at a big markup. In the end we paid him more than it was worth (but less than he asked for) to go away.
Shocking article in the Sheffield Tribune. A solicitor, Andrew Milne, buying up freeholds of houses and then making (false) threats to the leaseholders to bully them into buying the freehold at a huge premium.

Lots of nonsense in the ‘news’ about Le Pen. Unlike other MEPs, she and her colleagues treated the EU with contempt and systematically abused the EP’s complicated funding system. It was not a mistake. It was criminal behaviour. @europarl.europa.eu

Trump exploits weakness. In his first term, he hit us with tariffs, and he’ll do it again if we seem desperate.

Britain should secure a stronger deal, like a new UK-EU Customs Union, to protect our economy and ensure we deal with him from a position of strength.

Well done to Chris for a huge swing from Labour.

This result shows that where we work, we can win people’s trust & their votes - even in the red wall.

It’s vital for liberals to hold Labour to account, provide strong opposition, & ensure we don’t cede this ground to others.

Today is white ribbon day. It’s part of a global campaign to end male violence against women and girls.

To be an ally to women as a man is to hold other men and boys accountable for their behaviours that could lead to violence against women and girls.

Try getting booted off a train to Manchester from Sheffield despite having reservations because it was full and get on the next one, then that was full too …. Upgrades who needs them up here?
I left my house at 9.30 this morning. I've just arrived at @andrewhickey.500songs.com's house. Over an hour & 20 of that was waiting in train stations.

By car, depending on traffic, the journey takes about 40-45 minutes.

Just in case you're wondering if we really need rail upgrades up here.

Really interesting report from @livingstreets.bsky.social that shows pedestrianised town centres have higher sales.

Pedestrians spend more money in local shops than people arriving by car.

You only have to look at towns and cities in the Netherlands to see this in action.

The Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said growth is key to funding the repair of Britain’s crumbling infrastructure.
