Hi, I'm Ian. But I also go by the internet handle “Zoid”. I’m mainly an anime translator but also dabble in event interpreting. I mostly post in English, but feel free to use Japanese with me.

You can't have free expression without pornography.

Saying "free expression BUT those things I approve of" means that you open the door for when SOMEONE ELSE doesn't approve of something that you may happen to be fond of.

This is a hill I'd gladly die on.
There has been a noticeable reticence in left and liberal circles to voice full-throated support for pornography, even as it's become increasingly clear what the open end goals of the censorship movement are
In a lot of ways other leftists chose this path folks. They shrugged and didn’t care when Patreon banned a ton of hypnosis and TF creators, or when YouTube started their ASMR crackdown. Now it’s coming for queer porn creators, more and more. Who will stand up?

I finally got a chance to watch Gqux. It was, um, interesting. Definitely felt like new age ideas and designs mashed into the frame of a classic, but whatever. My only question was: is there an in-universe reason Kira-Kira wasn’t translated? I kept thinking it was going to be some ungodly acronym.

I hope the fans hold the line. Getting things faster may be nice, but a quality translation is worth the wait. Right now, a lot of companies are exploring AI options and ultimately it’s consumer habits that will shape the future of its use, imo.
As machine translation tools under the banner of AI become increasingly accessible and easy to use, the light novel landscape is at a crossroads. Do light novel publishers compromise their product for more speed, and if so, by how much?

Today marks a big anniversary for #IGPX - the 20th anniversary of the first US broadcast on #Toonami. The second episode also aired on this day 20 years ago, (November 5) and that really hooked me into the series. I don't think it's an exaggeration that to say it was a life-changing day for me.

20 years ago today, IGPX premiered on Toonami. I wanted to do something for the anniversary but I just didn’t have any time and I’ll be traveling today, so instead have a look at some rarely-seen production art. Celebrate the anniversary by getting the Blu-ray: store.crunchyroll.com/products/igp...

Happy Halloween! My costume this year is Jinya, from Sword of the Demon Hunter! My wife sewed the kimono and haori, which turned out fantastic! She also helped with the mask and arm, which are homemade from thrift store stuff. It turned out awesome!! 😃

This month, I looked at one of the most infamous mistranslations in Zelda history. In comparing the English translation with the original Japanese script, I hoped to uncover what may have led to this unfortunate error and how it might have been avoided.

[Anime Central 2025] An Interview with Pili, the Puppet Studio Behind Thunderbolt Fantasy
At Anime Central 2025, I received an opportunity to interview Pili, the Taiwanese studio that co-produced Thunderbolt Fantasy. I hope that fans of Thunderbolt Fantasy, fans of Pili, and anyone curious about unique media and entertainment can learn from the in-depth answers they gave. 1) Taiwan has a celebrated tradition of puppet theater, something that is likely unfamiliar to much of the English-speaking audience.

I’ve always had my qualms with the Hero Academia subs b/c they were overly literal, but I acknowledge it’s a valid approach that’s useful when English is the pivot language for dubs and whatnot. But there was an outright mistranslation this week, which is embarrassing for such a high profile show.
