Every time I go through a drive thru now with the Shumling in the car, no matter what I’m picking up, I can expect to hear a little voice behind me as I pull away…

“…fwies?”

and if I have just acquired fries, I grab one from the bag and reach into the back seat until I feel a little hand snatch it

I’ve never watched all of the ‘60s sci-fi show The Prisoner, but I’m aware of its influence — enough so that I had a weird dream last night that left me thinking about the show.

I found this quote from Patrick McGoohan on Wikipedia, and boy, if that doesn’t ring eerily true in The Age of AI Slop:

Huge congrats to the @spookydoorway.bsky.social team for a gorgeous, atmospheric experience (and for managing all those narrative threads — an achievement of Milesian magic in itself!). And shoutout to all the wonderful VO performances, too. I’ll be hearing Irish brogue in my head for days.

We (mostly @sundyst.bsky.social) wrapped up The Séance of Blake Manor tonight. Absolutely loved it. Much more a narrative experience than a puzzle game, but what a narrative, watching all the threads come together in such a satisfying way. And learned a ton about Irish history and mythology to boot.

finally took the Shumling to UVU’s beautiful new soccer stadium (brought to you in very very very small part by yours truly)

the Shumling made it to halftime thanks to copious amounts of popcorn, Sour Patch Kids, and patient parenting

next year: a whole 90 minutes, maybe?

The whole concept of insurance is so stupid. It's like if a bank just refused to give you back the money you deposited because they decided you shouldn't need it

(yes I am aware that banks actually do have the power to withhold customers' funds in certain circumstances but that's not the point)

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

so it turns out, watching Coco hits even harder when you are 1) older than 40 and contemplating your own mortality, and 2) watching while cuddling your toddler

thankfully the kiddo was distracted and did not see or understand why I was sobbing

Lex did incredible work, as did the entire staff at Teen Vogue — routinely out-covering larger legacy publications, with more journalistic principle and rigor. Incredibly bummed that the field in which I was trained and believed so strongly just isn’t a viable career any more.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.
