Ballet Folklorico de Riverside dancers -- always one of the best parts of the celebration

Bits and bobs from my altar, which I built with extra care this year because 2025 has been a year of loss. I've let The Planchette fall by the wayside, but I'm dusting myself off and looking forward to writing more in the new year.

Nopperabo is a strange supernatural phenomenon from #JapaneseFolklore. This yokai appears just like any normal human, but it is far from ordinary because it has no face. Generally nopperabo aim to scare unsuspecting victims out of their wits. They lurk...

This sounds like a dream job (if I had any artistic ability). I really miss the elaborate illustrations on magazines and book covers
Is it too late for me to become a mid-century commercial artist who illustrates cheap, pulp paperbacks and lurid magazine covers?

Huntington Beach is a mess...a loss for their city council is a win for all of us
This MAGA-led California city council just lost its fight on banned books
Huntington Beach voters support repealing a community board that bans library books.

This is exactly what I keep thinking -- every historical event that I was taught growing up was a sign or symptom of fascism is happening. The exact same stuff. But for some reason now it's ok.
leftists: that thing you teach us in school to be terrified of is happening

historians: that thing is definitely happening

star wars: here is a beat-for-beat breakdown of how the thing happens, but with pew pew lasers. we know you watched it

news outlets: these protesters are out of control

This kind of nonsense is exactly why reading a lot, reading widely and encouraging others to do the same is so much more important than ever now
Well there are haters and then there are haters. Someone does not want me to do US trips and has been sending tips to the FBI for both writing events that I’m a menace to society.
Wow. It was some bully nut job
Immigration detained me again. Took my passport. Yay. Fuck immigration

“We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth,” said President Kennedy in 1963. “A society that recognizes the enduring significance of the arts and the humanities ...

A long overdue new post: I was granted my first ARC! Look for Zoë Apostolides' quietly haunting The Homecoming this July:
The Homecoming, Zoë Apostolides
I love spooky, dank old country houses full of secrets, I love well-constructed stories with something to say, and I really love when an author manages to combine the two.

i'm so stoked for the murderbot show for a number of reasons but chief among them is that it's pretty rare that SFF written by not-men gets optioned and then actually adapted and filmed and released and i want to see this succeed so that there can be more

It's come to my attention that some people believe you can't buy a new book until you've read the books you already have. Let me assure you, as both a lawyer and a writer, that this idea is legally and morally WRONG and BAD. Buy more books.
