A nice honor to be named to Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers for 2025.

The recognition is a testament to all the hard work my research group and our collaborators have done over the years.

Feels like everything has moved slow since restarting here at Emory last year, but glad to have been nominated by my new peers and selected for this recognition.

Spent the weekend here reflecting & reconnecting. A sorrowful few days thinking of what was lost.

The CDC is ubiquitous to our community. An attack on us all.

Officer David Rose died protecting us. Take a moment to support & share efforts for the family he left.

#ASV2025 is where you run into a Nobel Laureate at the bar late at night and they wish you a happy birthday.

My birthday is in March. But thanks.

Recycling an old twitter thread for #ASV2025:

Heading to #ASV2023. One of my favorite meetings in virology.

My new students asked me for some tips on how to approach the meeting, so I thought I’d share some thoughts on scientific networking

🚨Second study from the lab. @CellReports
SARS-CoV- and SARS-CoV-2-like viruses are found in insectivorous bats, but the antiviral responses in these bats remain less studied. Here we show how bat cells respond to SARS-CoV-2 and shed light on virus entry.

Early innate immune response and evolution of a SARS-CoV-2 furin cleavage site inactive variant in bat cells
Baid et al. show that insectivorous E. fuscus bat cells have evolved an advantageous early innate immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection relative to human cells. Additionally, they extend molecular e...

Convergent evolution in nucleocapsid facilitated SARS-CoV-2 adaptation for human infection | Journal of Virology
After its emergence, SARS-CoV-2 rapidly adapted to human infection, acquiring numerous mutations across its genome. Many of these mutations remain uncharacterized. This study examines a mutational hot...

Our new paper on SARS-CoV-2 furin cleavage site is now out at JVI.

Study examines disruption (rather than deletion) of the FCS & maintains the longer S1/S2 loop found in #SARS2.

FCS disruption attenuates pathogenesis, but not required (but helps) transmission.

The furin cleavage site is required for pathogenesis, but not transmission, of SARS-CoV-2 | Journal of Virology
The presence of the furin cleavage site (FCS) within the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 distinguishes it from other sarbecoviruses found in nature. While prior works have deleted the FCS, these mutant viruses also shortened the S1/S2 loop, which is known to ...

I am really excited that @tamanash.bsky.social’s first paper on the remarkable evolutionary gymnastics of dual-host viruses (even in single codons) is now online.

Absolutely. The work by @tamanash.bsky.social is a tour de force and an example of clever, beautiful science towards better understanding of alphavirus biology.

Based on what I heard, an example of a great post-doc & future star in virology. Read his preprint:

For me, that means #bingo for MMG seminar with @harmitmalik.bsky.social

A good speaker to start this back up at Emory.
