Wow, I would not have guessed more than 2,000 people!

"The demonstration began early and steadily grew throughout the day, swelling to more than 2,000 people by early afternoon despite frigid conditions."

Iowa Nice. Fuck yeah.
You can see the progression and escalation here. I told them it was nothing against them, but we were already in the "Free Speech Zone" they established, POTUS is free to take another route, and we're not moving. So we didn't.

And THIS is what Midwest Nice is.
The so-called intellectuals of American fascism believe that it is impossible to have a high-trust society without racial homogeneity. But Minneapolis is already high-trust, and it is a tapestry of different peoples. It has shown what a farce that whole line of reasoning is.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Doom scrolling is not good for the brain. But random distractions when a head cold is coming on are nice.

Now it is time for whole wheat pancakes. Because.

It is Monday morning. After dropping your kid off for early morning jazz band, you have a workout before going to the office. You may remember two:

1 - Your lunch
2 - Your work shoes
3 - Your work pants

Choose wisely.

If you like this, you should be listening to @ologies.bsky.social where listeners ask such questions as "why are buffaloes' butts so small" and they interview people whose wives make them species-accurate owl sweaters.
Being a journalist is sick: I just contacted a pre-eminent jaguar conservationist in Argentine with a question that has been weighing on me for ages and he wrote back right away with an informed answer.

I attended a vigil tonight and it helped a lot. I have been in a funk all week and singing This Little Light of Mine with 20 or so other Iowans while freezing our cheeks off was good. I don't feel so helpless or alone.
One of the best organizers I know in the Twin Cities has a great line, "We can't always take away the hurt, but we can take away the alone."

strange to me that a lot of people on this website simultaneously agree that the administration is run by incompetents who struggle to carry out their agenda without major political blowback AND that they’ll pull off a complex and sophisticated effort to rig elections and prevent defeat in November

It's the PTO moms and spreadsheet dads and other random-ass Minnesotans concerned for their neighbors. There is no one central organizing org, just a ton of people who give a shit. It's both beautiful that it's happening and laughable that anyone thinks there's some broader apparatus at work.
James O'Keefe says he's never seen anything so organized as the anti-ICE movement, observers--he seems to think this term is code--everywhere he goes. Who is paying for it??? he demands to know. It's like he can't even imagine people caring for one another.

Wake up. Make breakfast. Do email. Watch a murder. Go to a party for a 5 year old. Laugh with my daughter. See a different angle of that murder. Hear govt officials slander the victim. Play Barbies with my kid. Feed her dinner. Tear up at that victim reading last honors to a vet. Put kid to bed. USA

I think the best decision I made this week was to follow @raptor-cambot.bsky.social and @goodtrailcams.bsky.social.

Between them and all the cats with food names ppl I follow, it is impossible for me to doom scroll.

If they are doing this to white people in broad daylight imagine what they are doing to non-white people in detention facilities.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but something I am learning is sometimes self care means peeing and eating when your body says you need to, not when it's more convenient. Take that break.

This sign I made came today. Glad it did so I have something I can do besides throw money at mutual aid and streetside orgs. I hope the ICE agent neighbors down the street see it and their nazi tears freeze to their faces.

Maybe I am missing something here, but I can't see what the upside for the Illinois counties would be.
An Iowa lawmaker has proposed a bill that would open the door for one or more counties in Illinois to become part of Iowa.

You cannot detain or arrest a baby, you can only kidnap her. These people need to wear a scarlet letter, need to ring a bell to loudly declare their moral bankruptcy. Everyone must be allowed to avoid them until they have made amends.
