ICE and CBP Agents Are Scanning Peoples’ Faces on the Street To Verify Citizenship
Videos on social media show officers from ICE and CBP using facial recognition technology on people in the field. One expert described the practice as “pure dystopian creep.”

More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

it’s challenging being a Black-owned newsroom during this time of anti-DEI and political attacks, but we persevere. that’s what our ancestors did.

if you can, consider making a contribution — big or small — to fuel our reporting on Chicago.

if you know a $$$ person in your life, spread the word.
We’re so thankful to everyone who is spreading the word about our work at The TRiiBE.

This moment demands more revolutionary voices in journalism. Support independent, Black-owned journalism today.

Yes, arresting a journalist for doing their job is a big flashing red light. But I don't want people to forget the whole reason everyone is out there.

This is what I saw inside:

Four holding rooms. Two smaller rooms were being used for holding protesters. Two larger rooms held ICE/CBP captives.

NEW — From our editor-in-chief:

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking about Anne Frank. She and her family went into hiding to avoid persecution.

In Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, there are immigrants who are afraid to leave their homes.

Steve is fine/uninjured. Some neck pain from being tackled.

His biggest concern while in custody was what was happening to people outside the facility since he couldn't hear any of the munitions from inside.

In typical Steve fashion, he also made a number of new friends while detained.

I really appreciated this! At the Chicago Reader, where I edited the arts calendar for years (a “Goings On About Town” analog), we had a completist approach to listings that was integral to the health of the city’s artistic fringe. It wasn’t a job that won awards, but it was incredibly fulfilling.
In my debut for @theatlantic.com, I wrote about the disappearance of cultural listings from major New York media outlets, and what it portends for artists, audiences, institutions, and journalists. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

When architecture is viewed as cultural and human enrichment rather than a playground for the rich, the results speak for themselves. The brickwork of Iran gained such traction because it reminded us that better, more beautiful buildings are being built elsewhere.
