That Oswald killed Kennedy, acting alone, is comprehensively proven beyond all reasonable a doubt, well beyond most historical facts we'd never question. The conspiracy theories did do a lot of real harm, but belief in them is essentially unfalsifiable. It wasn't a failure of the investigation.

We do know who killed JFK. The Warren Commission was an incredibly thorough and good-faith effort to prove and document what had happened, which they did. The conspiracy theories arose in spite of best efforts to avoid them, but there really isn't anything they could have reasonably done better.
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

The thing about Trump saying it’s fine for Mamdani to call him a fascist is that he genuinely thinks all of this is kayfabe, just as he could insult Rubio or Cruz but still work with them. It’s not possible for him to imagine other people being sincere about anything.

On one side of my family we have zero knowledge of our lineage before my grandpa. There was just nobody left to ask. He wasn’t even sure if his last name was real or made up. And there’s a story like this in almost every Ukrainian household.

Today is Holodomor Remembrance Day
🕯 Eternal memory to all victims of Holodomor. A moment of silence.

In normal democracy terms, we've in bad shape and things are getting worse.

In consolidated authoritarianism terms, we're doing pretty well, as the regime is haphazard, meeting resistance, and growing increasingly unpopular.

Depends on one's perspective. I started using the latter standard in Jan.
It is good to see the pushback on Trump lead to real losses for him. But it's hard to be optimistic when he still wields the enormous power of the presidency. ICE is still rampaging, HHS is harming people, the U.S. may be about to sell out Ukraine, the boat strikes...he's still doing so much damage.

It would also give *Ryan Lizza*—who could, in theory, have leaked this info at any point over the last 12-16 months—a role in both RFK’s appointment and the untold preventable deaths. But Lizza either isn’t self aware enough to realize that or is too busy selling Substack subscriptions to care
well, I read it, and the salient, non-gross part is Lizza alleging, midsentence and without elaboration, that Nuzzi ran numerous “catch-and-kill operations” on RFK’s behalf, which would give her a role in both his appointment and the untold preventable deaths he has abetted in office. Cool.

The idea that modern Republicans have actual beliefs and respect that in their opponents is laughable. Trump has made most Republicans reverse positions on dozens of issues because they're scared of him.
Republicans can often sense I have actual values and beliefs while we both realize that Corporate Democrats are following checks and doing whatever their handlers tell them to do.

We can have an actual disagreement based on something tangible rather than just gamesmanship.

As someone who nearly died in childbirth, despite excellent health and the medical care of a highly developed country (not the US), my anger at forced-birthers is matched only by that at "free birthers," who bully women into believing it's a status symbol to give birth without medical help.
At St James’ Church at Cooling in Kent are still to be seen the 13 children’s graves surrounding that of their parents that inspired Dickens to write the opening chapter of Great Expectations.

I guess even the folk memory of the huge mortality of childbirth and early life is now disappearing.

I hate to give the slightest smidgen of credit to Lizza here, but he does note one thing that's right: it matters not just as a sordid and revolting melodrama. This is one of the most powerful men in the United States government and he's floridly insane in a way that's not just putting on an act.

After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

I think it’s bad that ai allows people to pretend to live in completely separate realities so they don’t have to process news and events that make them uncomfortable. I think that is bad for the health of society!
Trump supporters are also making shitty AI videos of Trump arresting Mamdani in the Oval Office.

They don't know how to process what just happened in real life, so they're making the version they prefer with AI.
