A great many of the good things we used to like about Silicon Valley grew out of the somewhat indulgent management style of LLNL in the 1970s & 80s, like the concept of 20% time which grew entire new directorates.

Yeah, all that’s gone now everywhere. Blame MBAs and Jack Welch.
