This is such a typically ableist framing. Every patient with a post-viral illness or ME/CFS anywhere had been told by people like you that they are just depressed. *Maybe* that was true for your mom but generalizing from your anecdotal experience isn’t exactly a scientifically-based opinion.

I think a lot of the problems people have with them are regarding execution rather than the concept. I’m perfectly fine with BG3 having a disapproval system. I’m a little disappointed when selling Shadowheart into slavery earns about as much disapproval from Karlach as cancelling Taco Tuesday.

I love hallucinogens, I do think they can assist a bit with introspection, but spending thousands of dollars on travel just to incite terrifying psychotic episodes while a local indigenous person looks on with bemusement seems, you know, unhelpful.

I read an article once that said the ayahuasca-using tribes use it as a tool for crossworld communication rather than personal journeys, their shamans treat tourists completely differently than locals, and its use probably only started being a thing 50-300 years ago. Maybe don't take the witch trip
