my favorite Robert Duvall role is where he appears as a priest on a swing for 2 seconds for no apparent reason in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Reminds me of when there was a spate of dine and dash at restaurants and when caught they’d threaten you with a one star review.
Book club scams are now threatening authors who don't fall for their BS. In December, I received an email from Herry Sharp, so-called CEO of "Super Book Lover Curator" praising my novella We Who Hunt Alexanders.

Totally AI-generated and a scam so I didn't respond.

Now Herry is threatening me. 1/

Yesterday, a colleague, with a graduate degree, told me she asked Chat GPT to write her up the logistics of owning and operating a pool hall. I said, "But since you've never run a pool hall, you don't know if this analysis is correct." And it was obvious from her face that she didn't believe me.

I’ve said before that I strongly believe in a progressive global maximum wealth tax, kicking in around $10 million. Think what a life you could have if you had $10m! Everything you could possibly want! Now think about how that’s just 1% of $1bn. Insane. Too much. Would make you go weird

British people who think Britain is just like America. Have a word with yourselves.
There is speculation that the introduction of driverless cars could lead to jaywalking laws in the UK

65% of Britons would oppose making jaywalking a minor offence, including 41% "strongly opposed"

Only 24% are would support such rules

Forgot to say, not my cat popped in. This was literally 2 seconds after he appeared.

"After it was pointed out to me for the thousandth time it would be really really super hard and the first person to go won't be able to come back and it would cost trillions of dollars that even I don't have I, who remember my mum has compared me to Einstein, thought, you know...."

I wonder if he's been persuaded they're meta. Like he's laughing at himself but that really isn't how they come across.

Nobody loathes Ricky Gervais more than the person on his team who keeps telling him photo-shoots like this are a good idea. The greatest inside job in the history haterdom. Nobody else gets close.

I have jury service next week and don't know if I'll be picked yet so I'm enjoying lots of potential appointments coming up I have to put a question mark next to. If I have to do it, it better be a long elaborate murder case that goes all the way to the top.

This. As much as I hate AI I've started to worry it's becoming a convenient scapegoat for our worst behaviour. It's like blaming a microphone when someone says something racist.
NB Not everything that is shit is necessarily generated by AI. Worth reminding ourselves that bored humans in meeting rooms are still eminently capable of making dreadful creative decisions without the involvement of computers

Why do right wing nostalgia freaks never want to bring back the time when we only had three tv channels and no internet? They'd have nowhere to post their poems about proper bin men I guess.

Exactly. This is not a lot of money. And once destroyed you don’t get to rebuild it.
The entire UK diplomatic budget is about £1.4 billion a year. That’s pretty much precisely 0.1% of government spending.

BBC World Service is about £0.25 billion (it should be higher), or 0.02%.

These are rounding errors on rounding errors. Double each and public expenditure wouldn’t twitch.

Mad.

I’ve just been made aware Daniel Hannan is exactly, give or take a few days, the same age as me. And you’ll be shocked to learn I can’t remember shillings.
Fair play, Daniel Hannan's commitment to his comedy bit is unwavering.

35 odd years ago when I was doing an acting diploma I can confidently say I would not have considered going to see Matthew Kelly in Waiting For Godot but I am now. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
