So many new people are finding me on Bluesky so time for an intro post, methinks! Hi, I’m Rose—fond of absurd wordplay, good croissants, theatre and the sea, I write queer historical fiction with speculative elements. My first novel, A Sweet Sting Of Salt, was published earlier this year!
Rose is a white woman in her forties with brown eyes, dark curly hair, and a very expressive (wrinkly) forehead. She looks like a bit of a dork but hopefully a cute dork…She’s wearing a chunky knit scarf. Two copies of A Sweet Sting Of Salt: one features a woman’s nude torso and long hair that covers her breasts, the other is illustrated with nature and sea motifs in teal, deep blue, and dark yellow. Both are mysterious and romantic but in different ways.

IT IS NOT "RETOOLING" OR "ACCOMODATION" TO INCLUDE WHAT WAS ALWAYS THERE AND HAS BEEN DELIBERATELY EXCLUDED FROM HISTORY IN AN ATTEMPT TO ERASE US.

Frankly, the only challenge I have in writing queer history is how many people seem to be allergic to the word historical.

Begging people to stop perpetuating the narrative that queernormative spaces did not exist in history and that to show them in your fiction makes it feel 'shallow'
We have ALWAYS made spaces to be ourselves. We have ALWAYS found and created joy in our lives
WorldCon 2025 panel description Queering History Tagged Culture/DEI Room 423-424, 10:30-11:30 am In historical fiction or fantasy, writing queerness can present significant challenges. Primary sources can be scarce, and a realistic setting may appear to necessitate that queer characters must suffer. Conversely, queernormativity presents its own problems: Retooling a setting to accommodate queer inclusivity can leave it feeling contradictory or shallow. How do we create grounded, realistic spaces for queer joy and transformation in these settings?

Today's Supreme Court decision, though couched in the language of freedom and inclusivity, is a tragic failure for both the right to read and the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. Authors Against Book Bans stands firmly and fiercely against the decision and its rationale. To allow parents to "object" to the presence of positive books about the lives and rights of LGBTQIA+ people is to allow them to "object" to the existence of LGBTQIA+ students, parents, educators, and others in the wider community. You cannot “opt out” of reality, no matter what today’s majority opinion states. These books belong on shelves and these stories belong in classrooms and curricula.

As many as 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela will reportedly be told today they have had their permission to live and work in the US revoked by DHS.

The scale of this abomination is difficult to process.

CNN — The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday will tell hundreds of thousands of migrants that their permission to live and work in the United States had been revoked and they should leave the country, according to a copy of the notice obtained by CNN. The termination notice will be addressed to nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who came to the United States through a Biden-era parole program. More than half a million people from those four countries benefited from the program, though it’s unclear how many have since sought other forms of immigration relief while in the United States. The notice, according to DHS, is being sent to email addresses provided by those in the program.
