Not on here much because engaging with the news is still literally harmful to my health but popping in to say The Chronicle has gone full crank with this exhortation of COVID-skepticism that has nothing to do with higher ed.

Also I broke my ankle two weeks ago lol 🫠
The Coronavirus Consensus Was Wrong
Two Princeton political theorists demolish the half-truths and noble lies of the Covid era.

Hey friends. I had my first panic attack on Sunday and ended up in the ER. I’m not in a place to engage on the state of the world without fully losing it so you can expect me to be radio silent for a while. Starting new meds and prioritizing my health. Be very good to each other.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

I went to dinner and came back to surprise budget-hole death blows to research universities across the nation. You literally could not write a villain designed to destroy the global position of the USA with what has happened in the last weeks because they’d say it wasn’t remotely believable.

Anyway, the critical race theorists who argued racism is a structural feature of the U.S. and that racial progress is often met with racist backlash were always correct and that’s why these ghouls attacked the scholarhip.
Trump says he agrees with Vance that a DOGE staffer fired after being outed for making extremely racist posts should be brought back

I’m finally reading @deanspade.bsky.social ‘s “Mutual Aid” and this is entirely par for the course from the nonprofit-industrial complex.
It seems the queer NGO response to legal attacks on the queer community is to *check notes* lay off the people who could be doing vital work to resist these attacks.
Public Statement 🧵 (1/10)

(see full statement here- docs.google.com/document/d/1...)

We are deeply troubled by the news of HRC planning to lay off ~20% of its staff. These are not just numbers. These are people who have dedicated their lives to LGBTQIA+ rights.

Perhaps they will put those shipping containers on a train. I recall that being a widely used strategy…somewhere…

More people should read Derrick Bell.

I’ll be honest, if Musk gets to play in Air Traffic Control systems, I will not be getting on a plane for YEARS. Like his time unplugging servers at Twitter except this time planes crash or flight schedules collapse.

I’m no economist but I imagine playing games with the willingness and ability of the United States to pay for things it promised to pay for will eventually have a deleterious impact on the nation’s credit rating, impacting literally every financial transaction.

Present CJ is very thankful that past CJ decided this would be my vacation day for January.

I started planning for one day off every month, even when things are busy, and now it’s a nonnegotiable for me. Highly recommend.

“the main federal K-12 law, the Every Students Succeeds Act, spells out a litany of limitations on the education secretary’s authority—including express prohibitions on controlling what curriculum standards states, districts, and schools use.” Please remind everyone of this right now!!

I'm seeing a lot of posts encouraging folks to buy and read trans literature. In that spirit, I've made the course calendar and some of the readings for my Contemporary Transgender Literature and Cultural Production course available: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

It’s also just so deeply embarrassing for these people. You’re scared of trans TWELVE YEAR OLDS? They’re such a threat to you you want to mobilize the entire American empire against them? CHILDREN? Get a life. Absolute loser behavior.

So here’s the thing, we need to remind people that folks WENT TO JAIL during the Civil Rights Movement. They said “this is manifestly evil and I will not comply” and then were detained. I swear people think “Letter from Birmingham Jail” is metaphorical.

There are not enough jail cells for us all.

I understand it's scary for us all; but it's vital to remember that 'don't comply in advance' isn't just a slogan, it's a practice.

These orders are manifestly illegal and unconstitutional. Acting as if they are not is what will give them power. Trump has issued his writ--now let him enforce it.
It seems to me (not a lawyer) that it would be unconstitutional to put me in jail for calling a student what they want to be called. I don't say this to minimize the danger, but to remind all my teacher friends that we aren't required to follow unlawful orders
Here it is. This is abominable.

If you recall the concentration camps during Trump I, where human beings were left to sleep on the floor, where they had no access to soap to wash, where parents and children were separated…now add “somewhere shielded from view so they could torture people they detained without charge”. Ghoulish.

Keep in mind that an EO authorizing a detention camp isn't a done deal. That said, there's a reason I went to Gitmo twice while researching the last chapter of my global history of concentration camps.
Trump announces an executive order authorizing a 30,000 capacity migrant detention center in Guantanamo.

"Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold them because we don't want them coming back, so we're going to send them out to Guatanamo Bay."

What a fundamental misunderstanding of belonging and the role it plays. It is a fantasy to pretend that the classroom is a magical, non-social space free of the burdens of identity or politics or society. That is not and has never been what education is for. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...
The Classroom Is Not Your Living Room
The vogue for “belonging” misses the point of education.
