in car dependent America,

some people do not know about alternatives, and we can work towards common goals by sharing new perspectives

some people intentionally avoid articulating their biases by using the neutral diction of car dependent planning, and we need to elect leaders who will ignore them

It would cost the country

n o t h i n g

for the next transpo authorization bill to take discretion away from USDOT to grant permission to pursue cordon pricing.

It’s been proven here, let our cities cook.
Important, exciting research — air pollution dropped 22% in NYC's congestion relief zone within the first 6 months of #CongestionPricing (with reductions in the surrounding neighborhoods, too)

Cleaner air, better transit, great data — all thanks to #CongestionPricing!

"The authors marshal a compelling blend of history, statistics, and anecdote in support of a quietly radical argument: that mass car ownership, far from natural and inevitable, is a historical blip that can and should be reversed." 😍

Life After Cars dares to imagine how different, and enriching, a car-free world could be.

It’s all about the right clothes IMHO. I’d always rather be on my bike.
Just got back from biking home and I have to say as someone who also drove someone's car in the snowfall for a little bit today, I felt safer and more in control on my bike then the car.

And I don't even have fat tires or studded tires. Just my regular road bike tires.

Winter biking (& all biking) is not “all or nothing.”

Bike when it works for you.
Walk/take transit/drive when it doesn’t.

Use the bike & weather gear you have.
Add/upgrade as you see fit & can afford.

You may be surprised at what works.

electric assist on ebikes (or all vehicles on two wheels) should be speed limited to 20 mph

all cars in cities should be speed limited to 5 mph less than ebikes

Think much of the over-parenting we despise stems from the early on fear of the driver.
If parents weren't terrified of our streets kids would have so much more freedom and independence which might get them comfortable with their children's ability to navigate the world without them.

“The real problem isn’t that Vision Zero doesn’t work; it’s that many places have adopted that slogan without making any real changes,” said Amy Cohen, who founded @familiesforsafestreets.org. “It has not been implemented with the resources & commitment & courage from legislators that is required.”
Good story on the success of the more dead kids movement. Sure wish the Post's "local transportation reporter" had centered the story around some place a bit more local than Los Angeles, California.

America’s plan to protect pedestrians failed. A young woman’s death reveals why.
U.S. officials adopted Europe's Vision Zero initiative, but many cities have seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities despite efforts to improve road safety.

Enjoyed keynoting on PLACEMAKING in Akron Ohio.

It must start with a blank page; ask the community WHAT do they want.
• The Community is the expert.
• Cities must honestly want to listen; most do not. Tokenism.
• Engaging community is slower, but produces better results.

This.
I'm so fucking tired of so many people being killed in traffic crashes. I'm so fucking tired but I'm also so, so fucking angry.

I use obscene language because what is obscene is over 40,000 people/year dying in preventable crashes in the US, 7,000 or so who are merely walking, and society just 🤷🏻‍♀️

I dislike the term “traffic calming”. The problem is the street design, so I prefer “street calming”. You can’t calm traffic, like you can’t calm an inanimate object “car calming”. In reality it’s more like “driver calming”.

100% everything preventing you from having an acceptable quality of life right now is because of capitalism.
I’d love for there not to be a child/child free debate going on. Everybody is struggling. Nobody has time. Everybody should be living comfortably whether they choose to have children or not. Blame capitalism.
