A pastel showing Little St Mary's Lane in Cambridge. I have painted and drawn this old street several times including the view from the churchyard. This picture along with others was bought by someone who was a good friend and a great supporter of my paintings.

Hot take but a lot of opposition to “e-bikes” is just opposition to bikes in general. E-bikes are not quieter than acoustic bikes, when any bike is noisy it’s almost always noisy brakes or chain which apply to both types of bikes

Cities will micromanage an e-bike, but are fine with multi-ton cars being beta tested on our streets by remote workers overseas.

Anecdata: Drivers treat me badly on a bike all the time, but it seems even worse when conditions are bad (precip, ice, etc)

Theory: Drivers in part dislike people on bikes because we challenge the status quo.

When we ride in conditions where they think we extra-shouldn’t, they extra-treat-us-badly

Mamdani: "I speak of Renee Good, whose final words to the man who murdered her were, 'I'm not mad at you.' I speak of Alex Pretti who died as he lived, caring for the stranger. ICE shot him bc he did something they could never fathom ... let us offer a new path: one of defiance through compassion."

Mamdani is my hero. Including children back into society has solidified this for me.

it's not just that Mamdani is charming af (he is), it's that he is normalizing the idea that children are full members of society that we all share a collective responsibility for
From @acyn.bsky.social (posted on X)

"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?

Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tail…

Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.

Mamdani: Yes. It’s also the golden snake."

Kids are people too!
Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

Given all the work we do (thru the MUTCD) to ensure that our road signs and markings are safe and uniform nationally, having backup drivers that aren’t licensed for driving in America seems like a less-safe deviation than, say, some pavement art in curb extensions.

As some of y'all know, I volunteer at a women's shelter in Brooklyn. Over the time I've been there, a lot of women have approached me about starting a knitting/crocheting group.

The Big Barrier to this is that there is no money for supplies. (cont'd)

What people need to understand is that safe bike infrastructure means not only freedom for kids, but *freedom for their parents*.

I just met a captain at San Quentin whose kid rides 3.5 miles to middle school every day. A parent doing drop-off and pick-up would spend 60 more minutes in the car.

To suburban drivers used to having 100% of road space in their suburb, having to slow down a bit in the city because a pedestrian is crossing feels like oppression. I believe this helps explain some of the state laws preventing blue cities from doing traffic calming or road diets
