NEW: “You have made progress.”
“You are not a danger to yourself or others.”

The denial letter from Geneva Moore’s insurer directly contradicted her therapist’s words. Cut off from her treatment program, Moore slid into a monthslong downward spiral.

Her Mental Health Treatment Was Helping. That’s Why Insurance Cut Off Her Coverage.
Providers, patients and even some federal judges say progress-based insurance denials harm patients at key moments of mental health treatment.

I think too hard about too many things sometimes write thoughtfeelings down and let people read them + I steal money and resources and time from capitalist bureaucrats to facilitate group therapy political education for 18-24yr olds…all of this is part nourishing and part disabling

Archival documents are fun because here you not only get political critique and a revealing and honest look into national black politics (I particularly enjoyed the GA/Atlanta references)…you also get a first hand account of Bond in a Bay Area strip club with his wife
In this early access diary, Julian Bond outlines his objections to Jimmy Carter’s presidential ambitions, among them, Carter’s infamous “ethnic purity” position defending the homogeneity of established neighborhoods.

Was not expecting B*andeis to be a focal point of a Jimmy Carter documentary, nor was I expecting it to begin and end with tributes to the black woman who raised him, watching “Jimmy Carter : Man of the Plains”

at my alma mater, B*andeis, established as a Jewish college the same year as the Nakba, Carter encouraged the campus to send a delegation to the West Bank. I don’t know if this ever happened BUT I do know that while I was there the campus chapter of AIP*C conscripted blk students to a trip to Isre*l

Y’know…my first draft read is that he was just extremely smart lol and that’s how he intellectually and politically mature from the white boy, son of confederates, to scientist, progressive president, noble prize, etc…but I actually don’t know anything about his tenure as ga governor

Incredible statement given Carter’s known beliefs and words on Palestine.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden’s statement on Jimmy Carter’s death: “[T]o all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning - the good life - study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility.”

This deep dive on Netflix purposely turning movies into barely distinguishable forgettable slop is so insightful, researched & brutally hilarious. A must read if you want to really know what’s happening to the business AND culture of movies.

I’ve done this as an assignment, but with poems instead of whole essays, as a way to show students how limited and redundant AI is — buuut as I learn more about the global and environmental consequences of AI I am a bit hesitant about further incorporating it
This robs their writing of its creativity, so I have tried to encourage them to trust the process of revision, to mixed effect. But after a clarifying conversation one of my students agreed to submit two versions of her final paper, her original work and one corrected by AI.

Real life is not like science fiction, where the power usage required for processing rarely, if ever, factors into the plot.

I still care very much about the ethics of AI usage but I really think its environmental and infrastructural impact desperately needs more exposure.
AI Needs So Much Power, It’s Making Yours Worse
There’s a strong link between proximity to AI data centers and higher levels of distorted power in residential areas
