Interviewed for this story a few weeks ago. Still weird to me that reporters seek me out for my “expertise” on anything… TLDR - short term policies responding to weather shocks are not likely a long term fix with our rapidly changing climate.

Interviewed for this story a few weeks ago. Still weird to me that reporters seek me out for my “expertise” on anything… TLDR - short term policies responding to weather shocks are not likely a long term fix with our rapidly changing climate.

Why does every weather event seem to be “entirely outside of the 30-year climatology” lately? I guess we get bomb cyclones in Oregon now
Not every day you see a sub-950 hPa low form this close to the WA/OR coast. In fact, it’s entirely outside of the 30-year climatology for mid-November in that particular location.

I taught my intro-level Climate Econ class about global agreements from Kyoto to Paris on Tuesday. Any optimism that may have engendered in the group of 100 18 year olds disappeared when I showed them this report this morning…
TL:DR -
1) Whoops, emissions are up not down
2) Government ambitions are meh and need to be strengthened
3) Current policies don't even meet the meh level of ambition
On a side note, the UNEP report names and covers are pretty good sci-comm. So, I guess there's that.

New UNEP emissions gap report highlights a "massive gap between rhetoric and reality" and calls for a "quantum leap" in ambition to deliver Paris goals, as the world is way off-track today.
