Physicist, Dad, electronic musings as @entropybound (bandcamp & instagram)
The secret service interfering with commercial air travel, esp. the most dangerous parts, is not what I woke up expecting to read. The fact that this is not huge news can only be because of so much other huge news crowding it out.
Amid all the chaos in air travel, a major (bad) milestone has gone overlooked: For the first time, airliners flying in US airspace have come under electronic attack.

I found the perp. You'll never guess who it was.

Same guys will call it “leverage”, as offensive as it is to actual levers.
less than ten trans women tried to play collegiate sports and now the car dealership class gets to crash the global economy and set up sweatshops in the midwest

I really cannot see the logic of @schumer.senate.gov caving on the cloture vote. The government is already shutting down, and the problem is clearly on the republican side. We need to match brinkspersonship with brinkspersonship. Vote no on cloture, please!
March 14, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Adding to the sane voices asking the senate democrats to withhold their cloture vote. Amendments won’t make it, and a non-clean CR cedes power and, with it, whatever is left of the minority’s influence. The republicans provide a good example here and @schumer.senate.gov should listen to his voters.

The 12 monkeys sequel writes itself, no AI needed.
Reading an internal NIH guidance memo which basically says since we’re probably going to be shutting down labs with little or no notice just be sure to remember about the whole disposing of biohazard materials the right way thing. ☣️ 😬🤡

Few things make me feel better these days, but this did.
I am grateful that so many people found my open letter to Elon Musk moving and want to share it. Some well meaning people are just cutting and pasting it on their social media feeds. I would appreciate it if people would link to the version posted on @democracydocket.com instead.

Thanks.

My Open Letter to Elon Musk
From Marc | Elon Musk recently posted on his site that another lawyer and I are “undermining civilization.” This is my response.

This is really something. Our guy running our government (i.e. into the ground) has some peculiar anger issues that don’t seem suitable for public life.
Elon’s busy schedule today is claiming astronauts were left in the ISS for political reasons, getting corrected by an ISS astronaut, throwing a fit where he calls the astronaut a slur, then complaining that we should deorbit the ISS

As their prices increase, and campaign promises look more like “suggestions,” I’m curious if there is any photographic proof that either T***p or M**k have ever purchased or prepared even a single egg themselves, any style, with or without toast.

Countdown to US government questioning legitimacy of pope to their catholic faith.
If I bragged about going to church all the time and lectured people about catholic faith it would suck a lot for the literal pope to put out a statement on how much I suck
MAJOR BREAKING: Pope Francis has written a letter to US Bishops saying he’s following “major crisis” of “mass deportations;” takes on Vance saying “The true ordo amoris that must be promoted is that which we discover by meditating constantly on the parable of the “Good Samaritan”

I just realized that T must be deaf. When we asked him to “bring down egg prices”, he heard those last words as “constitutional rule of law”. Makes sense now.

Excellent thread on the US DOE - it’s again a reminder that the goal isn’t to save our money, but to wreck our society.
🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does.

Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does:

And the moral here is that many scientific discoveries - especially paradigm shattering ones - are often accidents that happen while scientists are going about other business. The more you support their freedom, and the more perspectives you welcome in, the more benefit we get as a society.
This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen.

Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !”

Been thinking about how the N**is contributed to 20th century technology and the first four that jump to my mind are: cars (VW), rockets (V2), big data (via IBM) and propaganda. It reminds me of something (& someone) and makes me wonder how we didn’t connect the dots sooner

Truly vile - the race to compliance is betraying vulnerable kids who need help.
NEW — I spoke to a staffer at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about DOJ's threat to pull funding if the org didn't comply with Trump's DEI executive order, and how org leadership rolled over.

"Rather than fight back, we chose to sacrifice trans children," they said.

An eternalstory, but Dylan nailed it in 1983 (via @joshtpm.bsky.social):

"They say that, ‘Patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings’
Steal a little and they throw you in jail
Steal a lot and they make you king”
