You'll love it." Bsky | stealthnoodle AO3 | Stealth_Noodle A final duel between rivals didn’t end with one bleeding out face-down in the dirt, so Akechi wrestled Ren onto his back, pinned one wrist with a knee and the other with a hand, and met his defiant glare, which didn’t falter even when the claws of Akechi’s other hand closed around his throat. Impossibly, Akechi could feel the thump and thrum of Ren’s pulse through the metal, pounding into his own veins. So much heat and life and potential held together by such delicate flesh. It wasn’t going to be clean. Nothing between them was ever going to be clean. But it would be as graceful as Akechi could make it, and he wouldn’t look away until he had drunk up the last of the light from Ren’s eyes. “I’ll listen to your last words,” he said, a little less coldly than he intended. “I make no promises regarding last requests.” Ren’s bootheels skidded and slapped against the floor. His arms shook and twisted but couldn’t break free. For a few seconds, the only sounds were his fast, heavy breaths, falling steadily quieter. Then Ren lay still and sharp, like shrapnel in the wake of an explosion, and said, “I want to know why you’re doing all of this.” There was no reason to deny him an answer, especially when he was about to take it with him to his grave. “Revenge.” “Is it worth it?” Two years ago, the scales hadn’t come close to tipping in favor of Akechi’s soul, and its withered remains weren’t any heavier now. “It has to be,” he found himself saying. “It’s the only thing that matters.” Ren started to nod, only to wince when he nicked himself on the tip of a claw. “One more question,” he said, pulling Akechi’s focus away...

And every day I decide to read a nonfiction book instead. I don't know what disease this is, but it's very annoying. Bsky & AO3 | shouldbeworking "Bet youcan't make that trash can from here," Ren says, pointing at a bin that is entirely too far away. "Don't be childish," Akechi murmurs. He balls up the piece of paper he was using and places it on the picnic table between them. Then, undeterred, he starts writing down something else on a new sheet of paper. "Fine." Ren pouts, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. Silence falls between them. Except forthe gentle whistling of the wind, the scratching of Akechi's pen. "I dare you," Ren says. Akechi finally looks up at him. He stares at Ren like he's the scum of the earth. And then he turns around and whips his crumpled paper ball way too hard at that trash can, missing it completely and smacking a poor, innocent woman square in the face instead. And so, it begins.

My favorite fic genre is Character Study, hands down, particularly when explored through the lens of a character other than the subject of the study. It's always interesting to see the same character's behavior, personality, actions, and desires drawn using varying mediums. Like winning or losing was life or death, every time, like he didn’t have a hundred Personas waiting in the wings, watching over him, every time, making sure he lives even if he loses. Ready to run out and save the show. Goro has witnessed them Samarecarming him uncommanded, lobbing full heals his way, even raining down disorienting white-hot bursts of neon that make Goro squeeze his eyes shut for fear of going blind. They only ever intervene when Akira hasn’t moved on the ground for at least thirty-one beats—Goro knowing the exact number because he counts the staccato ticks of his racing heart in place of seconds. Fact: Akira does not stop until he goes down. Something bright and graceful and incorporeal to anyone but Akira raises him up off the floor by his underarms, like lifting a puppet on strings, and when his heels clack against the ground all life returns to him. The same revitalizing light, dawn peeking through curtains, weaves all throughout his hair, highlighting it white and making him seem—Goro grimaces to admit it but if anything was, could be, can ever be, it would be him—holy. Fact: Neither of them have ever been holy, but who is Akira if not a nonconformist, a challenger of labels and limitations? Goro ponders this as a heaving Akira lets a nuclear blast he didn’t cast disintegrate the Shadow...

Instead of trying to get work done when my jaw is throbbing, I am taking a sick day so I can focus on ice packs and naps. Making good choices today (to make up for my poor choice of assuming getting two implants at once wouldn't result in more discomfort than just one)
