I've been deeply obsessed with Goro Akechi since Royal, and have been dying for a writer-focused fanzine, so I couldn't be happier to be part of this project! My favourite book is The Lord of the Rings, and my favourite fic tropes are reunions, post-canon and enemies to lovers. Goro’s hand tightens on the handle, unseen. “You being here is dangerous enough, or did you forget we’re on different sides? What do you want, and why couldn’t it be said over the phone?” “I want to come in,” Akira insists, again. There’s no bag on his shoulder, so no cat. “I’m not talking to you from a gilded hallway like your bellboy.” Casting a look back into his bare, bleak condo, Goro feels scalded. An open, half-drank bottle of stolen whisky stands beside the ashtray on the coffee table. Cheap cigarette smoke hangs in the air. The door to his bedroom yawning wide open. Eighteen identical grease-stained takeout bags laying discarded on the kitchen island. He should refuse. “Okay,” he replies instead, leaving the door how it is and rushing toward the kitchen. Goro’s eyes flick back to see if Akira’s watching. He isn’t. He’s standing at the door, counting the deadbolts as he closes it. Goro uses the moment to stuff as many takeout bags into his overflowing trash can as possible. Slowly, Akira takes steps into his space. Goro feels stone cold sober watching him—more than sober, actually—hyper-aware, like he’s on a stimulant. Akira still hasn’t said a word. “I installed those after the summer,” Goro blurts out. “The deadbolts. I was getting quite a few threats, if you remember.” The trespasser and reason for the threats just pauses, glances at him, then nods. He’s now standing by the fake potted plant Goro slung near the windows, rubbing the plastic leaves and frowning. Goro got that in October, after being in Akira’s attic, and no, he doesn’t really know why...

In all seriousness I never thought I would end up writing novel-length fics or learning bookbinding to preserve and celebrate my favs but all things become possible through this incredible and insane fandom. This is my first time participating in a zine and I'm so honored to be part of a project with such talented creators! Lately I've mostly been reading contemporary/literary fiction recced by friends -- I'm currently working my way through The Three-Body Problem! “Do you regret it?” Ren says quietly. He can’t go a second longer without knowing. He’s probably not ready to hear it, and he doesn’t have a clue what he plans to do once he does. Try to forget about it, maybe; let it slide again and pretend like it makes no difference to him. Goro doesn’t answer. Definitely a bad sign. Whatever. It’s fine. Ren goes for the ball that Goro had left stranded and taps it carefully into a pocket. The thunk it makes is somehow unsatisfying. “Guess I’ll take solids,”; he mutters. None of the other possible shots he could take look appealing, so— “There were... moments where I thought I did,” Goro says haltingly. “There was doubt. But my resolve was stronger.” Of course it was, because Goro doesn’t fucking know the meaning of giving up. He’d literally rather die. Ren selects his next target—the four ball—and slams it across the table, just to make something happen. Nothing does, except more chaos. Goro circles slowly around to the other side and regards him with that proud tilt of his chin, then pointedly turns his attention back to the table as the balls roll to a stop. “So... no, I don’t regret it. You of all people should know better than to expect me to.” Of course. Of course. It’s impossible to pass his test and be worthy of his regret. It’s always been impossible. Ren really is a fool for wanting him.
