He swallowed and admitted, “I watched you die; getting to spend time with you, in any way, feels special to me.” Akechi closed his eyes. “You and your damn sentiment,” he muttered, but Ren suspected that he got it; he was not, after all, the only one who had watched the boy he cared for be murdered, and Akechi had the dubious pleasure of having been holding the gun. “Fine, I’ll come back with you tomorrow, and you can pick what we do on Sunday.” Ren eyed him for a moment. “Even if that’s spending the day hanging out with Fu-Oracle or the other Thieves?” he asked, stumbling over how to refer to Futaba, because he’d almost forgotten they were in a damn palace. Akechi looked briefly pained, but he agreed, “Even then.” Oh, that was tempting, especially after Ann’s earlier comment about isolating. Except…well. “You know,” Ren mused, “we never did get to watch that Featherman film you like so much, and I wouldn’t mind going to the batting cages with you and kicking your ass.” Akechi stared at him for a moment, expression completely blank, before it bloomed into a wide, slightly toothy smile. It made him look oddly young, like someone who hadn’t sold his soul to a moral-less bastard intent on ruining everyone around him. Ren’s heart ached.
