WAM had @robarthur.bsky.social run a report for us that found that fielders in stadiums with closed roofs were, on average, positioned a foot closer to where fly balls landed than in outdoor venues. Theoretically, you could use WAM's data to position your fielders better and save a few runs a year.

Someone get Tommy Pham a BPro sub (s/o @enosarris.bsky.social for walking through DRC+ in the piece)

Tommy Pham makes his case for MLB’s next big metric: He calls it PhamGraphs
Pham proposes a statistical system that would account for how often a hitter faces high-leverage relievers and how defenders cope with wind.

Had an interesting, hard interview with @adamconover.net on his podcast. I think he is a great example of a smart AI skeptic.

My main messages were that AI is a really big deal, it has good & bad impacts, and that, by sitting things out, skeptics can’t guide use. open.spotify.com/episode/5cFK...

i’m going to intentionally wait until the new year to sub so i can give BP more of my money, and i’d love to get someone else set up with a subscription as a belated holiday gift.

all you have to do is reply here with your favorite player who never posted a wRC+ over 100 in MLB.

let it rip!
you have one more day to do this, and I really think you should
last effort: I run a baseball site with some of my best, smartest, and most talented friends. we do fun and engaging work all year long, and it's about to get more expensive to read that work as of 1/1. I'd much rather you get in the door as cheap as possible. It also makes for a great gift:

One of my goals when I set out to write more seriously in 2025 was to produce things that I was interested in and thought about a lot.

Being out of Pro Ball give me a chance to think about the game as an outsider again which was a fun experience.

Here the articles I had the most fun writing 🧵

late night null result: had a theory that the time thru the order penalty would be larger the second, third, or fourth times a batter faces that pitcher that season, but that doesn't appear to be the case

I wrote four pieces this year, and I'm very proud of each of them. The Saberseminar one stands out, because of how much went into it, but grateful for the chance to publish each:

This is a fun perspective on a pitcher, based on a custom report we did for ... a pitcher. Yes, if you are a pro or aspiring pro, you or your reps can reach out and we are happy to help do assessments based on public data or your own data you've collected and have license to use.
Splits like this are such interesting puzzles to solve, but for a guy like him I think it's fair to bet he'll figure it out vs righties and be able to put together a solid season.
