For instance: Since 2016, it’s been very fashionable to classify both Bernie Sanders and Trump as populists. Ok. But are they, overall, really more similar than they are different? No.

Absolutely crucial point, this. The “populism” label does more to obscure rather than illuminate that which animates, defines, and distinguishes these figures and movements as political and societal phenomena. For some people, that’s precisely what makes the label so attractive.
