we did it! a perfectly structured democracy. it's got checks, it's got balances. this thing is made to last. there's only one weakness: bad guys. if somehow some bad guys who don't care about decorum got elected they could basically just tip the whole thing over. luckily such men are unelectable

Utah candidate for the US House calls for Trump’s impeachment. Good.
Impeach.
CBS News has a report out.

“President Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, U.S. officials told CBS News ….”

My wish for 2026 is the death of hustle culture in the USA. Let’s leave performative bullshit, gross self-branding, and cons long and short in the abominable year that was 2025.

I named my fists Mason & Dixon because I want my punches to be unreadable.
I named my fists White and Noise because you're about to experience an airborne toxic event.
I named my fists Chekhov and Gun because you know they're coming but you don't know when

My Thanksgiving abroad story is the year I road my bike through the streets of Amsterdam with a frozen turkey in each of my two panniers. My rugby team was doing Movember so I had a ridiculous handlebar mustache. The turkeys were delicious.

If you were going to design a regulation to screw over Utah tourist businesses, this would be it.
National parks have SO MANY people from other countries (since they get real vacations!)

And they spend a lot of money on hotels, food, souvenirs, etc.

This is unbelievably dumb, it will destroy entire tourist towns

Oh hey, a reason to be hopeful: groves of American chestnut trees have once again become self-reproducing in the wild.

Turned off comments so 12 people don't show up to tell me why this is actually very sad. Be happy, you assholes.
Nearly a Century Ago, American Chestnut Trees Died Off. Now, Hikers Can Walk Among Them Again.
Efforts to restore the American chestnut comprise "one of the most epic conservation stories ever told.”

I know from personal experience what Jamaicans are going through tonight. It’s impossible to fully describe, but I’ll try.
At 19, I moved to the island of Guadeloupe shortly before it was hit by Hurricane Hugo, a category 5 monster.
We were lucky enough to live in the tallest building…1/15

Last night, Eric made dinner for my final night. Then we walked over to the sento. Gojo Guesthouse has been my Kyoto home. They are closing in May. One of my little boltholes is going, and I don’t like it. I don’t want to return. I really don’t. I just feel a lot of loss these days.
