I discovered a new Australian native bee, but there are still hundreds we need to identify
The discovery of a horned native bee that pollinates a rare plant highlights how little we know about Australian pollinators.

Oh, I love this. A new species of sea anemone was discovered recently that parks itself on top of a hermit crab shell like a hat. It seems to feed partly off the crab's faeces, but it also excretes a hard shell that extends the crab's home. In return, it's carried around the seafloor like a king.

Check out the magical metallic green scales on this Green-brindled Crescent (Allophyes oxyacanthae) ✨

This autumnal moth flies from September to November and can often be seen feeding on ivy blossom on milder nights.

Marsh sun orchids (Thelymitra longiloba) on the edge of Croajingolong National Park, East Gippsland, VIC. This is the first time I've seen this species - although I have seen a single plant of the similar Thelymitra improcera just nearby in the past. #orchids #inthefield #ozplants

A pleasingly round and stripey snail.

The variations in background colour and stripes on its shell have been studied by geneticists and ecologists.

We salute your contributions to science, little snail pal!

One of my favorite marine snails on the Georgia coast, the knobbed whelk (Busycon carica), a bivalve-killing predator that lives in sandy shallow-marine environments, but is occasionally seen buried (by its burrowing) in intertidal zones. 🧪🌊🐌

We’re snailposting, post your snails.

This particular snail with its long tail caused a stir in the snail community on iNat a few years ago.

Ms. Mantis on my front porch just now. This time of year the adult females sometimes wander to find new spots to lay their egg cases - I relocated her to a flowering shrub where she can fatten up on bees and stay hidden from birds. She’s a native species here (Stagmomantis limbata). 🐙🌿 #Bugsky

OK, I already posted tiny terrestrial snails, let's do a GIANT AQUATIC SNAIL. This is one of the largest marine snails in the world, a Horned helmet shell (C. cornuta). Helmet is right, that shell is THICK. #Snailposting #Invertebrates 🌿📷🐙

Bebe Pacific Sideband (Monadenia fidelis) - prettiest snails ever - even in miniature.

Shell not even 1cm yet - adults average 29cm! It will take this bitty 2 full years to get there - but they can live up to 10 years, so no hurry!

One of my favorite things about the tropical dry forests of Guanacaste are the winter visiting Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. They're later than a lot of other N American migrants, but they're starting to show up in good numbers now. When it gets too wet in Bijagua, I just head down to the sun. #birds
