Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵

As we've said on @strictscrutiny.bsky.social, limits on executive authority are only for Democrats.
Imagine if a democratic president did this

Something! Anything! Ffs mount some kind of defense! An ounce of resistance at least!
Democrats should boycott any further proceedings with Cabinet nominees until the fundamental assault on Congressional authorities is overturned. Trump can't fire inspector generals like that. Trump can't retroactively decide on appropriations after Congress has spoken.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance.

Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Republicans are about to learn that governing is really fucking hard as @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social details in @heatmap.news on why they’ll regret both the death of permitting reform and the broader govt funding imbroglio. heatmap.news/politics/rep...
Republicans Will Regret Killing Permitting Reform
They might not be worried now, but Democrats made the same mistake earlier this year.

This is probably the most important story of year in the energy transition. ~600 gigawatts of new solar added to world grids today. That will produce ~1,000 terawatt-hours of clean electricity, or ~25% of all US electricity use or 2/3 of India's. In one year! Simply massive & it's accelerating. 🔌💡
Good morning with good news: The world is on track to install nearly 600 GW of solar in 2024.

To put that solar tsunami in context, the world had installed a total of 760 GW of solar by 2020.

Global solar deployment will be up 29% in 2024 over 2023. Wow!

+1. And backlogged interconnection queues fundamentally come down to a lack of T&D capacity.

If we want a more reliable energy system, we simply need a lot more transmission!
There are a lot of drivers of reliability risk but fundamentally it comes down to backlogged interconnection queues.
**NERC's Long-Term Reliability Assessment is Out. Remain Calm.**

There's a lot of *risk*. Which means there's a lot of *opportunity*! ⚡

Update your models accordingly

🔌💡 Happy EPRA day to all who celebrate! Let’s make this happen folks!
It has been a BUSY week in permitting reform land. The good news: from industry to progressives to Trump, everyone agrees we gotta do something NOW. Good thing we have a bipartisan, bicameral negotiated bill ready to go!

Today is the day for EPRA folks! Get those phones out and make some calls!

Hey 🔌💡 folks! Remember last year when the good folks at Grid Strategies crunched the numbers and found that load growth had nearly doubled, from ~0.5% to 0.9%? Remember the frenzied flurry of headlines in the NYT, WaPo, etc?

Well uh… the 2024 update is in. CAGR is now up to 3.0% 😅

Few folks have as good a grasp on the energy system (and the politics & economics that underpin it) as John.

We have ~2 weeks to make this happen. Leave it all out on the field!
We need a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system for economic prosperity, quality of life, and tech leadership.

Difficulty in permitting energy infrastructure is harming that effort.

A bipartisan permitting reform bill passed out of committee 15-4.

Get this done.

I don't think you are thinking through the system impacts. Most grid failures of the past 4 years were due to over reliance on NG plants that didn't show up. Utility CEOs don't want to repeat that experience. Further, there isn't enough capacity on our existing NG grid for that much gas generation.
Respectfully, I disagree it's evitable, and if anything we now appear to be barreling toward a gas-heavy US future. Does @arnabdatta.bsky.social think new nuclear is going to get cheaper than gas at $3-4/MMBtu? Enhanced geothermal? CCS? LDES? Highly unlikely. bsky.app/profile/tnor...
If your climate strategy doesn't have a way to offset market penetration of ultra-cheap gas (which is substantially responsible for undermining the US nuclear fleet & will continue crowding out clean firm), it's not very serious. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/08/o...

OPEC cuts oil demand forecasts for the 4th time this year. 2025 growth now expected at 1.54 million bpd, down from 1.64 million. The reason? Clean energy adoption in industry and transport is happening faster than expected. The transition is real.
