"economic populism" and it's raising the minimum wage to slightly less than what the 16-year-old cashiers at a movie theater were making in 2018

Trans rights are human rights
chat what do you think the odds are we can get a senator on bluesky to say trans rights
Hello (again) Bluesky! I’m going to start posting here again, because that other app has become a disaster.

But first, I want to introduce myself. My name is Tina Smith, and I’m a proud United States Senator for Minnesota… ⬇️

the thing that amazes me about Matthew Yglesias is that liberal parties across the entire planet have taken his advice as gospel for years now, have done nothing but eat shit since, and this has apparently caused absolutely zero internal reflection on his part
Large minorities of the electorate have right-wing views on immigration and crime that mainstream politicians won't embrace, as a result voters back new parties or (in the US) outsider insurgents like Trump.

A boring theory of the populist right
A large minority of the public wants tougher policies on crime and immigration

He could literally shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and the centrist crowd would be writing op-eds scolding "The Left" for their hysteria the next morning
Left-wing people are fond of analogizing themselves to the Radicals and Abolitionists of the 1850s, but there’s no overriding signature issue to play the role of slavery in this analogy.

does it bother you at all that your immediate reaction to this ruling, effectively threatening to arbitrarily imprison trans ppl for habing sex, is to nitpick the tactics of the ppl protesting it? do you actually believe in anything? is there anyone you wouldn't sacrifice in the name of pragmatism?

How did we find another, even stupider Sam so soon after Bankman-Fried? I am calling for a complete and total shutdown on Sams until we can figure out what the hell is going on
The people dominating our political landscape, culture, and economy are just so stupid and full of shit it's almost impossible to describe

I have seen a vision of the future. In it, we spend the rest of our mortal lives trying to undo the Jim Crow State that President Gavin Newsom erected in 2029. Time is a flat circle, everything old is new again, we will be paying in blood for the failure of Reconstruction for 7 generations
im sorry, i love these and think the entire dem caucus should spend an entire week posting like this just to mock the absurdity of it all

I think that we need to get rampant speeding under control, but I don't want to further empower the police or artificially restrict cars. This leads me to the logical conclusion that we must let nonspeeders affix heavy weaponry to their vehicles and die historic fighting bad drivers on the fury road
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

How are you gonna defeat trumpism by letting trumpists determine your position on everything?
August 8, 2025 at 11:06 AM
the War on Terror broke something in Americans' brains such that they think just because they can imagine a thing potentially happening, they must act as if it *is* happening or is going to happen imminently and do everything in their power to stop it
I'm sorry, but there absolutely ARE legitimate concerns.

A kid with XY chromosomes who identifies as female but hasn't medically transitioned in any way is a trans kid. And THAT SPECIFIC trans kid probably should not be playing on the girl's basketball team despite their identification as female.
Buttigieg said parents have legitimate concerns.

To be clear: If you cannot be relied on to unequivocally defend transgender kids, you can’t be relied on to defend anyone or anything.

1. In a major ruling, a federal court has ruled that Trump's executive orders banning funding to orgs that promote "gender ideology" is likely unconstitutional.

This will help protect or restore funding for LGBT centers who are plaintiffs.

Federal Court Rules Trump "Gender Ideology" Funding Ban Likely Unconstitutional
The decision is limited to the plaintiffs, and could be used to further restore funding to transgender research and care.

what american democracy really needs is a system of patronage. every time a progressive politician retires, a no-name staffer with a mysteriously large bank account should appear and announce that they are the duly appointed successor to comerade Ocasio-Cortez and the Mandate of Heaven is theirs

I am so here for the Pritzker-Walz United Front waging holy war on the Democratic Establishment. The two Great Khans of the Mid-West

This is the XCOM Theory of History. Nothing is my fault, there was a 50-50 chance I'd have made that shot. No, don't ask why I was in a position where I needed that 50% shot to hit, that's irrelevant. It's BS RNG 0/10 terrible game
Yes! Trump gets treated as an agent of history because he won, and these two are treated as irrelevant because they lost… except both of them were demonstrably more popular than him at the time of their respective elections. Pure fluke that Trump got in
I always like to point out that 47 got fewer votes than either McCain or Romney in 2016.

The qualitative distinction is that they are doing it here now. Terror designations; emergency powers; mass surveillance; disappearing people to third countries and outsourcing the torture there; DHS itself; everything that we built in Iraq has finally come home
As bad as Guantanamo et al were, I think there is a stark qualitative distinction between it and Trump’s open, gleeful, flagrant defiance of the law. Remember, the thing about the torture memos is that they were making a legal argument for crimes, not laughing in the judiciary’s collective face.

It is categorically incorrect to say that Scar "threw" Mufasa to his death. He simply allowed Mufasa to fall (though some critics argue that he caused Mufasa's fall when he clawed his paws) into a stampede, where he was trampled to death. Terms matter.
Corruption requires explict quid pro quo. It is not corrupt to take an action that aligns with the interest of a person who gives you a gift, unless the official action was in direct response to that gift--a bribe. Terms matter. Accuracy and fairness matters. Regardless of what social media wants.

I don't think they think they'll never be out of power, necessarily. I think they think they'll never be punished for doing any of this, and Democrats will never abuse their power like they are abusing it
I think what’s most striking about the last few months is how rarely anyone in the GOP applies this simple test. A lot of checks and balances rely on this kind of worrying about precedent but it’s now totally absent, as if they don’t think they’ll ever be out of power again.
Listen to this National Review writer. (Although I would prefer it if people supported the First Amendment on principle, not just out of self-interest.)

ironically, "civilizational suicide" is a prettty apt description of what the "the woke left is committing civilization suicide" people ate doing
The bond market shows capital flight from the United States, with people selling off US debt.

It’s the opposite of what usually happens during economic turmoil, when people buy US debt because they think it’s the safest asset in the world.

The US-led global economic system is dead. By suicide.

Stop saying "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" about politicians who are absolute shit.

I've joined up here to help get the word out about an important election in Wisconsin tomorrow, and other ways to defend our democracy against those who think votes can be bought.
