There will be more deaths than births in the UK in 2026, according to the Resolution Foundation. Apart from the pandemic, this is the first time the country has reached this crucial tipping point in the modern era. By 2049 annual deaths are forecast to exceed births by roughly 130,000. As a result, any future population growth will come from migration. But most political parties want to reduce the number of arrivals, and net migration is already down from a peak of 944,000 a year in 2023 to about 200,000 today. This leaves open a fundamental question: how can an the country support an ageing society and maintain services such as the NHS without welcoming migrants to top up a dwindling pool of tax-paying workers? There isn't an obvious answer.
