Okay, time for a much-requested thing: a THREAD OF THREADS. I've now written dozens of these sciencey threads now, and it's increasingly easy to lose them in the scrum of new stuff on here, so - here's a roundup.

First: the mystery of the BONG BONG BONG: bsky.app/profile/mike...

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

In Italy labor unions helped start a network of left-leaning news/music radio stations that have become some of the staples of public information in much of the country. They now run on a donation / ads model, but initial investment was from labor. I think about this often.
The AFL-CIO should start throwing some money towards labor journalism. If it was done right (i.e. with them accepting that journalists must have full editorial control over what’s published, whether or not union leaders like what they have to say) it could really have such a hugely positive impact

Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.

Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

#China is cutting oil demand in transport. Has that ever happened in Western countries?

The problem from their point of view is that rapid decarbonization requires public, collective decisions about the organization of production, in a way that threaten capital-owners' authority over both the production process and the political system.

Hey so Michael Burry (the dude Christian Bale plays in The Big Short) just took out a billion dollar short bet against a few HUGE Ai companies…………

Reminder that he made mega bank betting on the housing market to fail back in 2008. No one believed that was even possible at the time.

The article doesn't say it, but this cool solar forecasting software uses no large language models, the thing people usually think of when they hear "AI." It uses a fairly simple convolutional neural network that's readily trained on a laptop. No data centers or LLMs involved. Research paper here:

Gov't-backing of 50-year mortgage would create more buyers, but 'more demand, same supply' means prices go up. Plus, a buyer who can't afford monthly payments of a 30-year mortgage probably shouldn't be on a 50-year either, they're likely to default.

It'd just be inflating the bubble a bit more.

Growth for growth’s sake is bad news for the planet’s finite resources. What I’m referring to is economic stimulation: allowing people to work and earn, so they can spend and live. The alternative to the model of “growth” to increase dividends to further stock up the wealth hoarder’s coffers.
