Conservatives in Canada are hitting Mark Carney for being too willing to deal with China and the man they wish was their king blurts out that China gives him bills and he signs them, classic bit.
Trump: "China will be sending me a bill very shortly supporting year round E15 to my desk, and I will sign it without delay"

How are they *so* bad at this and still claiming some of the victories? (The answer is piles upon piles of cash)
Visual metaphors are my passion

This reminds me of the right-winger who refused to ever to listen to Neil Young again because he tried to get Joe Rogan's podcast canceled.
Straight up choosing the side of profound cultural impoverishment.
one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen

There's a lot going on right now that deserves our focus more but let's try not to forget about US President Donald Trump giving a speech in Davos which is in Switzerland where the primary language is German during which he told them that if it wasn't for America they'd all be speaking German.

Potterworld's biggest problem is Rowling. She's an albatross not just because of her bigotry which more Potter content funds, but because she's Too Big to Edit. A once-mediocre writer with editing has become without editing a fully bad one.
Fresh creative blood is sorely needed but she won't leave.
Setting aside LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE, the reason WB is making a Potter show is because of how hard it is to maintain interest in any piece of IP across decades without new content. The Fantastic Beasts movies failed, so now they're gonna try this (obviously doomed) thing.
this is a very weak piece, for multiple reasons. its claim about Gen Z is based on a couple of comments, not actual sales. it is also extremely normal for kids not to be *that* into a series from two decades ago. And there's minimum mention of Rowling turning into a fervent bigot.

Things on ICE and Trumpist fascism are picking up steam after this latest recorded murder in very George Floyd ways which is curious considering how so many sage politics knowers were so certain that the post-Floyd movement was dead and were so eager to tell us so.

Minnesota gave the world Prince, Bob Dylan, the Coen Brothers, MST3K, Sinclair Lewis, Judy Garland, Josh Hartnett, The Hold Steady, and maybe just saved the US (even the world?) from MAGA fascism.

Forever honoured.
The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

This whole thread is good shit but I would echo this in particular.

A lot of libs and lefties note the highly evident stupidity of right-wing politics and jump to the conclusion that dumb people are taken in by it.

But that gets the progression wrong. Right-wing politics *makes* you stupid.
Which all takes me back to something that became really clear to me waaaaay back when I read Fred Clark’s analysis of Left Behind

Bad politics make you fucking stupid

One of the underrated aspects of the multifaceted nightmare of our troubled times is that so much of it, while absolutely nightmarish, is also a very very funny bit.

Even in a hypothetical case in which there is no incontrovertible video evidence, surely the boy who cried wolf lesson is fully operative at this point.
You *know* they are always lying. Why give them the benefit of the doubt that they aren't?
A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.
January 26, 2026 at 12:39 PM
Basically everyone assumes that the Trumpistas are lying whenever they say anything, except their base and the legacy media (and the base are in on the lying so it's really just the media).

The time is coming when even the media will have to assume lies too.
it's insane, there are thousands of observers like alex on the ground, we all know what he was doing, people knew him, it's clear on the video. the only "evidence" that he's got a terrorist manifesto is that the people who killed him said "well I bet he had a terrorist manifesto"

Federal officials described the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old U.S. citizen by a federal agent as an act of self-defense. The video evidence that has surfaced so far contradicts that assertion.

It's cold comfort for the slain and for those who fight on it their names but fortify yourselves for the struggle with the recognition that this is not a demonstration of their strength but of their weakness.

In addition to confirming that the 2A fanatics were the frauds that we always thought they were, all of this is blatantly exposing the Right's supposedly anti-government principles as similarly fraudulent.
Never want to hear a conservative drag out that bullshit ever again.
We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

Canadian Conservatives who still approve of Trump are traitors. There's no other word for it.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”

Welcome to the Resistance, Lord Fauntleroy
Rod Stewart, "It hurts me badly, deep, when I read that draft dodger Trump has criticised our troops in Afghanistan for not being on the front line"

"We lost over 400 of our guys"

"And Trump calls them almost like cowards"

"It's unbearable"

Fiercely independent Albertans, as always doing exactly as they're told by their far-right government and its foreign paymasters.
Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

It's like they have no idea what children are like, that when you try to force them to do something they'll rebel and do the opposite simply to spite you.

Possibly applicable to more than just their approach to children, as we've seen.
just thinking again about how MAGA’s attempt to suppress all criticism of Charlie Kirk created a backlash so intense that he is now probably the most abjectly Internet-defiled person in human history
genuinely Charlie Kirk may have been more degraded and demeaned by the Internet at this point than anyone else in human history

the universe is not always unjust

Belarus beating Sweden with a shot from centre ice off goaltender Tommy Salo's dome. Salo was the Oilers' starter and it totally ruined him but by gawd it was so funny.

People are loving Sentimental Value but they should be more sentimental about the value of preserving American democracy!
Interesting that so many of you are talking about the Little Gold Man (Oscar) while there’s a dang ORANGE CHEETO in the White House!!!!

"An independent Alberta could be as great as North Dakota" lol

Aim high, buddy. Get that ambition.
The ignorance of Alberta separatists is astonishing.

Having 170 billion barrels of oil is NOT the same as being able to sell 170 billion barrels of oil.

Supply and demand, fellas, google it.
