what the founders didn't count on was "what if, no."
The Founders were so concerned about bribery that the Constitution forbids it three separate times. Two emoluments clauses ban officials—unambiguously including the president—from accepting things of value, plus bribery is the only named impeachable offense besides treason.

Unprecedentedly corrupt.
To negotiate a trade deal with the President of the United States, the Swiss government arrived with a "special Rolex desktop clock" and "a 1-kilogram personalized gold bar"

as a mental health patient and not a professional it is my worthless opinion that we are absorbing too much media engineered to push all of our buttons and fuck with our emotional regulation while compartmentalizing to function under capitalism while evading the impending doomsday of climate change.
Question for mental health professionals and not astrologers: why is everyone being fucking insane right now

I do want to note Mamdani's transition specifically calling attention to like, people applying for city jobs and how many CVs they got in the mail, etc, because when was the last time you saw a politician actually talk about expanding state capacity other than hiring more cops?

Neoliberalism's magical forever-shrinking conception of the state had created such a strong political taboo against expanding the state bureaucracy that even when politicians talk about delivering more services, it is almost never explicitly through the marshaling of more labor.

This was very early in the magazine's run (September 1985), but they were already knocking it out of the ballpark on the cool covers front.

in city government, we're not allowed to accept thank-you cards
Cue the Roberts Court saying that it’s not a bribe if Trump didn’t officially ask for a gold bar in return for dropping tariffs.
"It was tough to beat Apple, but the Swiss did it." said one administration official.

How the Swiss convinced Trump to drop tariffs with gifts of a Rolex desk clock and a 1 kg gold bar.

Almost everywhere in the City of Toronto has fewer people that it did 50 years ago
