Retired NHS nurse, book lover, Rambler, Brummie, and frustrated writer. Currently busy despairing about the state of world, its politics and climate. This might be why I drink too much.
There is so much to feel bad about the state of the world it is easy to lose track of the good things. Here are a gang of us from Birmingham Ramblers starting a walk in atmospheric mist. It got sunny later, and hours later we were in an amazing pub. It was a good day.

Fifteen years of ideological choices to strangle & gut the public realm - NHS to schools to social services to local museums - is what underlies the anger "tearing our country apart"; immigration is simply the scapegoat that the far right are pushing people toward.
Why can't Labour just say this?

No, it's scumbag politicians and right wing grifters weaponising immigration who are tearing the country apart and she's just given them all a glorious victory.

Refugees & asylum seekers are largely a vulnerable, traumatised & disadvantaged group of people so to keep demonising & scapegoating them for political gain is disgusting & despicable. The end doesn’t justify this punching down means & in any case the end here seems to be the propaganda itself.

Wow .... I am really SHOCKED ... who would have thought super efficient and very left wing Wes Streeting could be 'chaotic and incoherent'.

Eight child abusers were jailed today.
8 child sexual predators who had been operating in areas such as Gravesend, Gillingham, Swanley, & Margate jailed for a combined 100 years.
This managed not to be the top story on repeat for BBC, itv or sky News.

I wonder why.

This is everything wrong with Starmer in one social media post. COP is about protecting the planet from becoming uninhabitable. It needs a coordinated international effort, yet Starmer is playing the nationalism and economic growth card, which is the opposite of what is needed on multiple levels.

Give us another 6 months, and we'll be outperforming THEM in the polls too.

So either Labour need to ask candidates to step aside for the Greens to take on Reform....

Or actually bring in a fair democratic process where everyone's votes count equally.

It's time for Proportional Representation.

In the news “loads of NHS consultant posts empty, total crisis.” Also in news “workers striking for fair working conditions are terrible/ greedy/ v clear this is the final straw.”

When’s the penny going to drop, Starmer? You have to support NHS staff if you want to keep them.🚨

I've written for the Metro on how Starmer's latest attempt to look 'tough' on asylum seeker hotels has exposed him as a coward.

A government spending more just in order to inflict greater misery on refugees is beyond contempt - & that contempt is showing up in the polls. metro.co.uk/2025/10/29/k...

Privileged economist gives his opinion about something that won’t affect him at all, but will plunge more people in to poverty and despair. When you’re not affected by the cost of living crisis, 1p tax increase is the same as a 3p tax rise apparently. We should all be willing to suffer 🤡
Lots of Labour despair on the timeline today.
The next election is likely more than three years away. The route to winning it starts by acknowledging that some more short term pain is probably required to get into a position where victory is possible.
This budget is going to be painful. But 1/3
