you actually don't have to do a splashy profile about a socially inept, racist 20-year-old whose parents allowed him to pump himself full of steroids starting at age 14 and who attributes his physical features to smashing himself in the face with a hammer and using meth

love new york magazine's writers, do not love the back-end bullshit that autoplays kara swisher and scott galloway's video podcast on every article in order to artificially juice the metrics so they can justify the insane amount of money they spend on those two instead of other talent

if i were to have seen a video of a white woman in a blouse and skinny jeans and comfy sandals setting fire to a building that was to be sold to ICE—which i absolutely did not, to be clear—i would probably make some kind of "millennial excellence" remark

but i didn't see that, and neither did you

it would actually be cool if @bythebywater.bsky.social were nominated
Nominations are now open for the 2026 Hugo Awards!

Emails are going out to eligible nominators (those who became a member of LAcon V by January 31, 2026, or were a member of the Seattle Worldcon 2025) about how to set up their LAcon V virtual convention account.

the joy of watching something and going “how did they DO that?”, the magic of sport and entertainment, something i thought was universal but no, legions of people just want computer to feed them something computer deemed statistically pleasing

never, ever forget that sam altman and elon musk and dario amodei etc *need you to buy into this technology* not for financial reasons but because they *want to build enough compute to birth the AI god that will rapture them into AI heaven*

I took a little heat pre-strike for being quoted in Variety for saying "the real threat of AI is there's a lot of hot, dumb money behind it." This to me is still the primary threat -- disruption without good results, and we'll be left to clean up the mess.
Maybe take seriously the idea that the people at the levers of implementation will try it even if it's *not actually any good*.

"white collar jobs" is so vast a label as to be useless in this context. i have copywriting clients who've come crawling back after a couple years because their output is featureless slop
I'm not even saying that's the most *likely* possibility, but it's just very clear that the likelihood of that outcome as increased and even if there's, like, a 1 in 10 change that "AI replaces most to all white collar jobs in 10 years" that's an *enormous* risk to the social order!

LUTNICK: I did have lunch w/ him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation. My wife was with me as were my 4 children and nannies. We had lunch on the island. That's true. For an hour. We left with all of my children

always a huge bummer when i meet someone who seems cool and then they talk about having a car here because they "need it to get out of the city" as though renting a car a couple times a year isn't cheaper
Something to keep in mind the next time the city tries to repurpose parking and drivers complain that every last car is necessary at all times. The storm was two weeks ago.
