For people who don't know me yet, my research is as much about race, gender, and the politics of (im)migration in Europe as it is about the Syriac world and Middle Eastern Christianity. This article is an example of how I bring these themes together: journal.culanth.org/index.php/ca...

They’re wearing masks so they can’t be prosecuted later. As long as they think they can’t be prosecuted, their crimes will intensify. They will torture, starve and kill, as they have already, on greater and greater scale.

Signed, someone who’s covered the unaccountable War on Terror for 23 years.
I’ve come to believe that we need to gather considerable forces and a campaign to demand the removal of face masks by ICE, Border Patrol, FBI and police.

It is a practice in conflict with the principles of transparency & accountability that are central to the concept of democracy.
Video on social media shows an immigration agent pulling a gun in Little Village and holding it to the side — which is not an appropriate or safe way to hold a gun. (Among other issues.)

Easily several hundred people have packed into this plaza in Chicago's North Center tonight in response to ICE abducting a daycare worker early this morning.

This is a neighborhood that has largely been spared until now from the "Midway Blitz" terror campaign. But everyone knows someone affected.

This massive intergenerational trauma we are inflicting on so many children keeps me awake at night.
A piece really worth sharing, esp. w those who don’t consume much news.

We don’t focus enough on children’s trauma in times when the world around us is on fire. There were many young Anne Franks during WWII, noticing & being shaped by their real-life nightmares. Goes for every conflict & horror.

What is an Incarnational reading of history? How does our relationship to history shape the ethics of our relationships with others? Why was there no such time as "pre-modernity"? Find out in the final installment of my series for @publicorthodoxy.bsky.social!

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Rough math: 12.3% of Americans (41.7 mil) are about to lose SNAP. Many food banks produce 3 meals per $1, so a November worth of meals for one costs $30. Round it up to $35 for asst. costs & hygiene products. If 13% of us donate $35 each to food banks, we can get everyone through Nov! #EndHunger 🥙💪

This leads to crucial questions for converts or inquirers in any community with deep cultural roots:

What does it truly mean to belong in a church? Dr. Sarah Bakker Kellogg's @sbakkerkellogg.bsky.social powerful new article, "On Not Understanding the Words," challenges the modern idea that faith is primarily an intellectual exercise.
