And every time libraries "step in" to do things, it's added load to library workers who too often are seen as "no one."
I wish more people were aware of just how many things their public libraries “step in” to do, how many gaps they fill silently.

NYC, as budget season commences, we need to end the annual budget dance — a gratuitous, insulting ritual — and ensure consistent, generous funding for our libraries.
“In 2019, as [Gannett] began fully moving operations out of the bldg, the entire collection—by then scattered across the basement—was suddenly in limbo… The Poughkeepsie Public Library stepped in, agreed to pay rent on a dedicated storage unit + took on physical custodianship of the archive…”

Yeah, there are so many books I'm glad I didn't read as a surly teen first because they are actually great books, but it wasn't the time for me.

Not to say I hated all the classics we read in school, I enjoyed many, but 1000000% the teacher made a difference. (11th grade English was a huge slog.)
I think some people’s reluctance to engage with classic lit comes from the high school English class experience, which depends largely on what kind of teachers you got, but I’d argue the biggest problem with that system is that you just have so little life experience at that age

I watched SPOTLIGHT for the first time today. I was still a kid when all of this happened, but it feels relevant considering...everything.

A newspaper team that opened the Catholic Church's cover-up, and then the last 20+ years have seen the systemic destruction of newspapers and journalism itself.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.

And you know why?

Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.
BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.

This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.

You know, now that you put it that way.... oh. 😁
bluesky might actually have more "fuck you you're not my mom" energy than any other place I've ever been

which is probably why I'm so comfortable here lol
Laughing at journalists who say if Bluesky was nicer to them there’d be more journalists here like…you don’t know your audience AT ALL.

Trying to shame Bluesky into behaving the way you personally want is like trying to keep a cat off a counter.

That cat is gonna be on the counter EVEN MORE now.

I liked Wicked (part 1, haven't seen the second one) better than the book because the book is so fucking awful it made me develop a person rule for when I put a book down. If I don't give a shit even a LITTLE by 1/3 of the way through, it's time to stop!

The movie is ok.
Conventional wisdom says the book is always better than the movie, but that's not always true. Here are some movies I liked better than the books they're based on. What are yours?

• Fight Club
• Naked Lunch
• Wild at Heart
• Institute Benjamenta
• Devil in a Blue Dress
• Picnic at Hanging Rock

13 yr old me and a friend were like "Let's go see a movie. Any movie."

We picked Mr. Wrong. We both left like, "I cannot BELIEVE I paid nighttime movie prices for that."

Truly horrible, on so many levels.

Actually, even though he's 14 years old and kinda runs on three legs, I feel like my dog would still do respectably at any sprint. His favorite thing besides eating chicken is being faster than other dogs.
Ok, what Olympic events would everyone's dog be best at? I think Gracie would have a shot at the podium in the 5-meter freestyle sock chase

You may be tempted to roll your eyes and say that this was obvious, but there is a substantive difference between pointing out there is a slippery slope and having solid evidence that Ring's CEO is planning to expand Search Party beyond lost pets. Kudos to 404 Media.
Scoop: Ring's CEO told staff Search Party is not going to be just for dogs, according to a leaked email I obtained. Said it is "first for finding dogs" before suggesting it would be expanded to be used for crime:
