Can we make brains “smarter”? By boosting mitochondrial metabolism in neurons of memory circuits, we improved memory in flies and mice. Thrilled to see this work out - congrats to @amrapalianjali.bsky.social for spectacular work, and to all lab members for invaluable contributions!

Yeah man, I personally cannot in good faith have any continued engagement on X. Plus...this place is a hoot! If you take the time to choose your own adventure here, you can curate a fantastically personalized experience filled with whatever floats your boat, including a ton of good/weird science.

I am looking for examples of a 2-3 hour lab activity for a course that would allow college students to get some experience connected to environmental DNA studies (e.g., e-DNA, rRNA/ITS PCR, metagenomics, etc). Ideally this would have some DNA extraction and some follow up processing / analysis.

Honestly, I've never understood why the Bay does not have more ferries for transportation, not to mention using the shore which has largely been industrial for housing.

Affordable housing using barges is something that @benhuh.bsky.social and I talked about years ago.
Allison makes the hilarious and manifestly correct point here that, hey, maybe a bunch of cities lining the world's most spectacular natural bay should use boats to get around? What about that? www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti...
San Francisco Bay Area traffic is worse than ever. Could a ferry boom make a difference?
Embracing ferries as a core part of our regional public transportation system is a no-brainer.

This used to be somewhat more common, but California sure does love their car culture. My grandma graduated from UC Berkeley in 1937 and for a couple of years post graduation, she took this ferry from the Oakland pier to the San Francisco ferry building to her new job. sdmaritime.org/visit/the-sh...
