If NJ wants to regulate the fast, heavy e-bikes, fine. But create a separate class for light pedelecs per EU definitions and define that as a bicycle:

<25 km/h
<250W
e-assist only while pedalling

The young, educated, ambitious people who want to live in Toronto and Vancouver are being forced out by high prices.

We could build more housing for them, but we prefer our cities to become stagnant retirement communities.

I think I finally figured out the reason why I don't like the centrist think tanks. They'll describe something terrible and 99.9% of the time their solution to do it is a half measure that probably doesn't even solve the problem.

It's a good grift if you can get onto it

Uh.

They’re right there, babe.

A point that needs to be made over and over again rn. What we're watching has extremely little to do with immigration enforcement. Its a bunch of thugs basically in a state of rioting bc theyve lost their minds and dont think there will be consequences for their behavior
They don't even pretend it's about immigration or crime or whatever anymore. They'll arrest and they'll beat and they'll kill all because you don't cower in fear and respect like they want. People hate them and it makes them furious.

Let’s be clear: The Israeli government is choosing to demolish homes in Gaza during a ceasefire.

This will devastate families reeling from war and does nothing to create real safety for Palestinians or Israelis.

The ceasefire must be honored, and violations must not be ignored.

More than 2,500 buildings have been destroyed since the start of the cease-fire, according to a New York Times analysis. Israel says it is demilitarizing Gaza.

one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny
It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.

I don't think it's a coincidence that all of this (worldwide) is happening when most of the people who lived through WWII have just died. We need to do a better job of keeping their memories and ideals alive.

it was very obvious to me from the early terf wars that there was a kind of bigotry black hole: the transphobes all became racists. the racists were all misogynists. the misogynists were all authoritarians. much of my work since then has been devoted to trying to understand why.
you know how if you try and make LLMs more racist, they also end up more sexist and pro-genocide? this is the human example of that. evil isn't a single thing, if you start down one path you keep ending up at the same destination.

I think the thing that's damaged my perception of reality more than any other is that the same loudness of outrage is leveled against somebody drawing a character off-model or saying something mean on the internet as there is for, like, murder or governmental corruption.

Having worked nearly four decades in both the public and private sectors in roughly equal proportions, I can attest to this. Neither has a monopoly on waste, incompetence, innovation, or excellence.
Reject all claims that either government or the private sector is intrinsically more competent.

Both can be run well or badly. Both have ways of rewarding either competence or incompetence.

Focus on the people in charge, and their incentives.

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end
