Why does the state government of North Carolina have a monopoly on liquor?

Mostly, because we inherited a pretty dumb system that no one has the guts to change. 🥃

The number of septuagenarians (aged 70-79) serving in Congress has roughly doubled in the last 20 years. The number of octogenarians (80-89) has quintupled.

One fact about food stamps (SNAP) in North Carolina that many people don't know is that while urban/suburban counties have more recipients overall (because that's where most people live), rural counties have many more recipients as a proportion of their population.

The federal food stamp program (SNAP) was temporarily saved last week. But unless Congress figures out a deal soon, it's going to run out of money - and when it does, 1.4 million North Carolinians will go hungry.

Here's what you've gotta know about food stamps in North Carolina. 🥦🍓🍞
November 3, 2025 at 4:15 PM
The large majority of food stamp (SNAP) recipients in America are children and the elderly.

Among all adults who rely food stamps, a large share are disabled (10%) or taking care of dependents. Of those who aren't, a majority are working in jobs that just don't pay very much.
November 2, 2025 at 12:46 PM
Who receives food stamps (SNAP)? It's mostly American children and old people in poverty.

Based on official data from the USDA (most recent, 2023), 89% of SNAP recipients are U.S.-born citizens. The rest are naturalized citizens, and a small number of special (legal) cases.
November 1, 2025 at 12:00 PM
BREAKING: Two federal judges have slapped down the Trump administration's attempt to block food stamp (SNAP) funding, instructing the USDA to keep the program open.

Another big win for @jeffjacksonnc.bsky.social and a bipartisan coalition of 25 states who acted.

If Halloween 🎃 candy is pinching your wallet worse this year, it's not your imagination.

In 2025, the price of candy is skyrocketing. Ouch.

Beginning in just a few days, SNAP benefits - food stamps - will be suspended for about 41 million Americans who rely on them, due to the federal government shutdown under Donald Trump.

Imagine buying a home for the same real cost, compared to your income, that your parents or grandparents did.

That's a reality today in Japan. 🇯🇵

How'd they do it? They built.

The U.S. federal budget deficit is now larger (not smaller) than it has been in any year since the pandemic - and it's still growing.

Support for abortion rights are effectively a 60/40 issue in North Carolina. A consistent majority of voters support reproductive freedom, and only a tiny, fringe minority of hardcore anti-choice activists want to ban it.
