In not great climate news today, it seems we've been severely underestimating the Earth's energy imbalance.

There have been warning signs that climate projections aren't keeping up with the observed changes, and this would at least in part explain why.

They've really sharpened my view of what good-faith actors in the climate risk industrial complex should try to achieve: treat models as metaphors, be transparent about value judgements, present results with humility, and make decisions which are robust to uncertainty - not paralyzed by it.

Sun at its highest point on the shortest day in York, UK. Beautiful wintery day.

Some positive news! Even coming off the back of a government that did precious little for the UK’s climate commitments, we’re still seeing a seemingly unstoppable rise in renewable energy. Goes to show that the economics of renewable energy just make sense now, and that’s a big deal.
NEW RECORD: 2024 is the first year in history when wind, solar and hydropower generated more electricity than fossil fuels in the UK.

How did global air temperatures vary before 1850?

We can now answer this from direct instrumental observations.

The new GloSAT dataset is under review!

One of my favourite data discoveries this year: Google's mind-blowing ARCO-ERA5 dataset: hourly data for ~300 climate variables, available globally from 1940! 🤯

Loadable with a single line of Python code from a single cloud-friendly Zarr file! Below: a month of wind waves + swell: 🌊

**New Paper Alert**

Thrilled to finally announce the release of our Part 1 paper that re-evaluates and quantifies (normalizes) historical US hurricane losses. This builds upon previous work by introducing counties affected by the radius of maximum wind.

Atlantic ocean circulation slowdown intensifies tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic
The slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is ubiquitous in climate projections, representing a major risk of global warming with far-reaching climatic impacts. Here, we in...

I'm not sorry to see the back of this season. I'm sure it'll prove to be an interesting #climatechange data point in the future, but.. urgh. The season's "b" storm hitting and maintaining cat 5 really was a sign of Not Good things to come.
