Climatologist/cat modelling R&D @ Liberty Mutual Insurance. Interested in understanding and modelling changing extreme events. Views my own, not my employer's. Currently distracted by early fatherhood.
Some of the wording in this article is quite telling. "Worrying", "difficult to reconcile with models", "caught us off guard" to highlight a few.

The authorship of this article is extensive and includes some highly respected and experienced researchers. This is not one to be taken lightly.

They've really sharpened my view of what good-faith actors in the climate risk industrial complex should try to achieve: treat models as metaphors, be transparent about value judgements, present results with humility, and make decisions which are robust to uncertainty - not paralyzed by it.

Can’t disagree with that! Glad new entrants are running a bit of competition for the big guys, but there are some seriously questionable outfits out there

I feel like “the blind leading the blind” would be a fairer assessment! We know some of the models suck, but it’s (largely) not for want of trying. If the alternative is the kind of “non modelled” solution that’s pervasive in data poor regions, heaven help us.

If more people referred to trees as “cutting edge carbon sequestration and storage technology” we would be in a much better place. Love this approach. And such a great visualisation!

Pretty sure "Emeritus" is Latin for "Never going to stop publishing"

It's damper than I usually like the inside of my house to be. But I've got an emergency roofer on the way to fit the world's most expensive tarp over the hole, so that's all fine.

Very nice! Meanwhile in North Yorkshire… well I think you stole the snow before it got here

I didn't realise! But knowing @elliehighwood.bsky.social (and the knitting culture at Reading) I can't say I'm at all surprised 😆 Long live knitting-viz!
