What an absolute tragedy that David Letterman is not on the air to riff about Hamnet for at least three weeks.

All of this money spent on this study and not a single mention of things that might keep people away: disruptive audience behavior, increasingly poor technical presentation, every shrinking theatrical windows (or day and date indies). I love theaters, and go multiple times a week, but it’s grim.
How Can Movie Theaters Fill More Seats Again? A Bain Report Shares Suggestions
"Audiences haven’t abandoned theaters; they need a more compelling reason to go," the consultancy highlights, sharing suggestions for how to bring fans back to the cinema in the post-COVID era.

I know this is very "so I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time," but I'm sad that there are no mid-dots in the headwords of the new M-W Collegiate 12th ed. I know only four people in the universe used them, and no one knew what they were really for, but I loved those li'l guys.
I love this book.

Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

There’s a non-zero chance that at some point I simply stop engaging with anything produced after 2019 or so. Spend the rest of my life entirely living in the past.

someone else will have to come up with actual numbers, but losing book reviews from the AP means losing them from all the local papers that already aren’t paying critics to write reviews directly for them

this is part crisis in criticism and crisis in reading. People read book reviews not just to make consumer choices but to stay—or maintain the appearance of being—culturally literate, and there’s less interest in even being able to pretend you read the book everyone’s talking about
It's profoundly saddening to read that AP will no longer be assigning or running book reviews because readers don't engage with them enough and they take too much effort to plan and assign. People complain about critics as gatekeepers; wait until all that's left is marketing.

It is increasingly clear that western governments are invested in Israel—politically, economically and militarily—because its hypermilitarised culture, murderous border regime and complex latticework of internally segregated citizenship are the model they aspire to as the response to climate crisis.
I don’t think Germany’s staunch support of Israel is merely ideological or rooted in post-WW2 guilt. I think it is largely strategic. I think it is planning for a world where Germany wishes to suppress or expel much of its non-white population. The Nazis are at 25% in the polls, for goodness’ sake.
Germany’s huge cuts to the sectors providing migration services while pumping huge money into its military points to a fundamental reshaping of German society. A hard-edged future where security is valued over community. Migrants (non-white, obviously) are mere threats to be policed and controlled.
