Meanwhile in Russia: pundits rejoiced about Trump's approach to Greenland, which they surmised is "delivering a catastrophic blow to NATO" and is "truly tremendous for Russia."

While this won't end the war anytime soon (the first prototypes will be delivered in 12 months), giving Ukraine the ability to halt Russia's war machine is essential for a robust peace. The only thing Putin respects is strength.

Trump is weak at home, and he can be stopped – so long as the domestic political logic of foreign intervention is recognized and turned against him. This act of war is about regime change in the United States. It only succeeds if Americans allow it to do so.

It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.

It’s about oil and regime change.

And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.

Canada’s response has shown why we need the NDP: Poilievre applauds Trump. Carney's government cannot muster a single world of criticism.

Whatever you think about Maduro, Canada cannot be an accessory to this blatant violation of international law.

The US has attacked a country, kidnapped its head of state, and is seizing its oil. Trump has invoked the Monroe Doctrine.

This is a moment for Canada to stand up: condemn this act of imperialism. Reject impunity and the politics of brute force.

Kudos to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy for keeping himself together after Trump‘s statement that „Russia wants Ukraine to succeed“. I would have bursted out laughing. But his facial expressions are priceless.

In addition to repeating the security mistakes of the past, the Witkoff-Dmitriev "plan" has the US profit from Russian assets that it doesn't even control, has Ukraine abandon 250k Ukrainians in Donetsk, and gives full amnesty to Russians for war crimes. So much for Russia "compromising".
A few experts going right now: "hear me out, Budapest Memorandum, keeping Ukraine out of NATO, telling it to accept loss of Crimea, and pretending the Minsk Accords meant to save Ukraine's sovereignty were all mistakes, but if we now combine all this idiocy into a 28-point plan, it might work!"

"In my opinion we haven't had a crisis like this since 1993-1994."

Siberia is feeling the pain from Ukraine's refinery strikes, with fuel stations shutting down entirely rather than paying inflated wholesale prices. The situation is normal in Western Russia, for now.

The main lesson from last night for Poland (indeed all NATO in CEE) should be that their defense starts in Ukraine.

Imagine the results if Russians could launch a massive UAV attack on Poland from just over the border in Ukraine?

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.
Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

@davidebybc.bsky.social, selling our resources to benefit anti-Canada MAGA investors will be very unpopular with people who voted for the BC NDP out of a sense of patriotism. Trump-aligned investors that support the 51st state agenda should be last in line to own critical infrastructure in BC.

The Russian news agencies are doing their best to play down Ukraine's attack on strategic aviation. Some people are speculating on possible Russian revenge (Oreshnik 😱), but it would be strange to do anything dramatic in response to something you are pretending almost didn't happen.

Our democracy distorting first-past-the-post system fuels the polarisation driving separatist movements.

@mark-carney.bsky.social, you can end this and bring in proportional representation—uniting Canadians with a truly representative democracy.

What are we waiting for?

Looking forward to seeing @anderspucknielsen.dk's take, but this looks pretty good: Ukrainian ownership of minerals and infrastructure, no blocking of EU accession, and no "debt" for past US aid while incentivizing the US to donate more. Solid work by the Ukrainian negotiating team.
⚡️BREAKING: Ukraine, US sign minerals deal.

Ukraine and the United States on April 30 signed a long-awaited minerals agreement that establishes a joint investment fund for reconstruction in Ukraine.
