A proud Canadian who is sorry for the 1/3 of US voters who were against Trump, and regrets the suffering that the other 2/3rds are experiencing. He/him
For anyone else reading, be cautious about immigration consultants. Lots of bad actors are trying to scam people with inflated application fees (far above those posted on govt websites) due to a lack of regulation and oversight.

A great example of investing in the infrastructure needed to wage a drone war *before* another war happens, as @gametheory101.bsky.social discussed recently. Good on Renault and the French government.

Not sure Syrskyi has what it takes to conduct offensive operations successfully:

NEW: One of Ukraine's most famous soldiers, Bohdan Krotevych, tells me why Commander in Chief Syrskyi must be replaced for Ukraine to win the war, why Azov still has a waiting list to join, and why the suggestion drones can replace infantry is "so stupid".

Aren't they (the Arab dominated Syrian government) engaged in an offensive against the (Kurdish dominated) SDF? bsky.app/profile/thes...
5/ The Syrian Ministry of Defense appears to have begun its assault to capture Syrian Democratic Forces-held territory in the Deir Hafer salient in eastern Aleppo Province on Jan. 16 amid recent US de-escalation attempts. This ground operation will likely remain limited to eastern Aleppo Province.

Sounds like the only clear indication would be all those ER doctors walking off the job (at once, or over time).

The exterior-interior transition looks really nice. If you have the time, it would be neat to make the snowflakes move faster outside. That would create a more blustery feeling that matches the audio of howling wind.

That's pretty funny, wish I saw some Gundam/anime burgers over there!

Unfortunately the McDs I went to in Asakusa was very limited for veg stuff, with the closest meal being a "shrimp Filet-O". Japan's own MOS Burger has way more veg dinner options.

Japanese McDs are worth trying. Most of the food items are what you'd expect, but it's the Japan-exclusive sandwiches and desserts that are pretty neat.

The Europeans are sending very small numbers of troops to Greenland. It won't make a difference for any russian plans for the Baltics or Finland. If we're talking about sending thousands of troops to Greenland, then that might shift the calculus given how small non-US NATO armies are.

Getting the Ayatollah and his supporters out of power without causing a civil war or years of strife is the tricky part. As they've shown, they have access to firearms and aren't afraid to use them against unarmed civilians. I'd love for there to be a solution to that dilemma.

"- Get on the ground in coastal B.C., base yourself out of Terrace.
- Ignore the interior and Alberta until you have the terminal decided,
- And don’t worry about the shipping route for now."

Good advice that's far better than the tried and untrue strategy pursued by the feds and AB.

Greenlanders should charge $10 million per person. They're the ones that would be giving up their homes in perpetuity, so they have the leverage to play hardball.

Ukraine has been employing SPGs by driving them out from shelter close to the frontline, conducting a fire mission, then driving back into shelter. Is that better than a towed artillery system that has to stay in a dugout? Probably, although there are uses for the latter where mass is important.
January 8, 2026 at 5:16 AM
Ukraine only uses towed artillery due to a lack of self-propelled platforms (domestic production of guns is not the bottleneck). As RUSI puts it, on the modern drone-surveilled battlefield, "dispersal and mobility are absolutely key"

Doesn't this give Danielle more ammunition to push for a pipeline to Northern BC? Nevermind the dubious logic of building a new pipeline along a new route rather than expanding TMX (which would itself risk being a stranded asset as the world moves on from fossil fuels).

Greenland is a nation within the kingdom of Denmark, so Greenland is about 0 km away from Danish bases. If the Danish government wants to reinforce Greenland, it can do so using its existing sea lines of communication. Whether it has the will to do so (and the backing of the EU) is another matter.

Chinese congee, Ukrainian kutia, American Soylent... all delicious soft options for a meal. Well, maybe skip that last one.
January 6, 2026 at 12:50 PM
A carrier group 3000 km away would be irrelevant, considering that there are 0 carrier-based aircraft capable of travelling that distance for a sortie. In any case, the point is to make an occupation untenable. Greenland is too rugged for troops to use armour, so a dispersed militia could survive.

Trump's tariffs on us in Canada were based on lies but had a very real impact in terms of job losses, particularly in our auto industry. I think "Trump is a clown (unprincipled, illogical, easily angered, etc.)" and "Trump is dangerous" aren't mutually exclusive.
January 5, 2026 at 9:23 AM
I wouldn't say this is true given the extreme amount of resistance Trump put up to releasing the Epstein files, only backing down after it was clear that a bill would be passed with an overwhelming majority. At the same time, the cementing of fascism in the US is not being properly appreciated.

"L'Europe ferait bien de tirer les leçons de cette expérience. La soumission volontaire [comme celle de María Corina] n'est pas la meilleure stratégie pour arrêter un narcissique, et encore moins pour gérer son agressivité."

Absolument, et c'est le même cas pour nous au Canada.

One of the most prominent Canadian publications, the centre-right Globe and Mail, has written a sobering editorial called "Venezuela’s fate is a warning for Canada." We are viewing Maduro's seizure as a precedent-setting marker of a new imperial era. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/edit...
