The national guard should return to their roots of just hitting the bricks when they disagreed with/disliked the mission. The concept of the national guard perfectly following federal orders was a 20th century innovation and like most 20th century innovations it turns out it was a huge mistake.

2. The United States was clearly the "bad guy" in the War of 1812 and it was such a disaster it was almost a game-over-type situation for the country.

Here's my top three:

Yeah, if we're going by faithfulness to the source material, Del Toro should be imprisoned, but I calm myself down by remembering the first film "adaptation" of Frankenstein was more than a century ago, so "Frankenstein Movies" have their own distinct rules, lore, and expectations.
this is only tangentially connected to the book but once you let go of that and just soak in the vibes and aesthetics its fun as hell
