BTW, a 2021 Carnie Mellon study found that ridehail's arrival in a new city *increases* car ownership.

The reason: Few residents ditch their car, while some become ridehail drivers and buy vehicles.

📢Global Carbon Budget 2025📢

Fossil CO2 emissions continue to rise in 2025 while the terrestrial carbon sink recovers to pre-El Niño strength.

The key findings are covered in two reports this year:
* ESSDD (preprint): essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es...
* Nature: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The land and ocean CO₂ sink are 25% and 7% smaller, respectively, than they would have been without the effects of climate change and variability, on average for the 2015-2024 period.

Combined, this is equivalent to the total sink (land and ocean) being nearly 20% smaller than otherwise.

Good thread from Dave about the new IEA "Current Policies Scenario" making a lot of the headlines.

Here is a very quick mock-up I made of what this scenario assumes for solar PV additions through to 2035, with historical context.

I'll let you decide whether this seems likely.

"Falling BESS cell price plunged system prices by more than 50% in last 2 years."

Earlier this week I wrote:

"the rapid decline in the cost of batteries combined with increased performance has made a mockery of most predictions from even a few years ago."

It has changed everything in energy.
Good morning with good news: Global BESS/grid battery demand surged 36% during first 9 months of 2025!

Why?

Plunging prices!

Falling BESS cell price plunged system prices by more than 50% in last 2 years.

Solar/wind now are often built with batteries!

Maybe Bill Gates can explain to poor Indian households why they’re not able to afford clothes anymore because climate change has caused extreme rain leading to a collapse in India’s cotton output.

But sure, Bill, climate change isn’t the immediate urgent problem, is it?
Extreme rain collapses India’s cotton output which has fallen to a 17-year low.

“Western states Maharashtra and Gujarat, along with southern states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, received heavy, untimely rainfall in October, damaging cotton crops ready for harvest.”

This doesn’t mean pollution controls are wrong. What it really shows is that unless we rapidly reduce GHGs, the *real* warming comes through in full force.
